#96 Overwatch Event Impressions in Other Games

To anyone that's upset about Blizzard inviting people like STAR or jerma or that muselk guy instead of other high level tf2 players: How aware do you think Blizzard actually is of high level tf2 players that aren't b4nny and still actually play tf2? Not many current top level tf2 players have that much exposure outside of this community tbh so you really shouldn't be all that surprised that more popular tf2 playing youtubers got asked over high level comp players.

I really hate living in a world that caters far too much to stupid people. 92 FoV isn't that bad I guess but how hard is it to open up a fucking options menu?

Come on Dis, a furry that doesn't even play competitive has more hours than you step your game up.

The first one is Defy.

#20 experimental csgo section + changes in CSGO General Discussion
aim-I'm p sure we only have 1 guy here who plays pro dota, 2c

Several people from this community play the game often casually (including myself) and at least somewhat follow the competitive scene. Pretty similar to how most others are with CSGO around here. Plenty of dota related threads pop up from time to time and having a dedicated section for it like CS now has would be kinda nice. There's already a tab for it in the stream list.

4812622was the bfb really banned? i feel like it was allowed in tf2lobby or something at least, i remember my friend using it

pre-buff it was a subpar gimmick. you were really fast and has tighter spread for more mid-ranged power, but you couldn't jump and were as slow as a demo walking to mid. it was actually pretty challenging to use properly because you had to time your jumps so you could hit 1-2 meatshots right after so you didn't lose any speed. it also charged significantly slower i think. i liked the concept of jump-shooting and tighter spread on old bfb. if they brought back the old bfb and tweaked the stats to make it less shitty it would be nice.

It didn't charge "slower" the charge was completely based on your damage output, but when they buffed the damage, they didn't change how much damage charged the meter so now that it does more damage you can charge it way faster.

But yeah BFB is broken as fuck and anyone that thinks it should be allowed in any competitive format is outright bonkers.

#10 I Want to start playng Competitive match in TF2? in TF2 General Discussion

With a game like tf2 hours don't really mean shit. The basic concepts are so easy to grasp (and at least partially translate from other shooters if you play them regularly) that as long as you have half a brain you could probably at least start learning how to play competitive with only a little bit of time into the game itself.

#10 state of pugs in TF2 General Discussion

Centers are easier than IRC pugs but tend to be filled with significantly lower leveled players. ESEA players want value out of the premium they have to pay for to play in the league + maybe if people start actually using the pug system for more than a couple of days every year or so ESEA will finally start updating it to be less bad. Everyone else plays inhouses with friends or dedicated pug groups.

If you don't like centers and aren't in any of the other two categories then you're SoL I guess. Make friends with people that run pug groups.

#54 Comprehensive List of Everything Wrong w/ Comp A:R in TF2 General Discussion

The main problem here and what validates the arguments of community fracturing is the way A:R is presented as a format. ANYTIME you're given a description of A:R anywhere one of the first things you'll see is "an alternative to 6s." Always. Out of curiosity, I went and watched one of the casted matches or pugs or whatever it was on the extv youtube channel just to check it out and just about every five minutes or so during the game extine would go on some spiel about how 6s players don't like something or won't try something that they're doing in A:R for example: "Well 6s players don't like to use this weapon but VALVE says it's fun so we use it in A:R."

Like seriously, the format's existence itself isn't what's going to fracture the community but more of how it's being presented to the twitch followers and youtube subscribers that have been built up on the foundations of 6s and HL for numerous years and now he's forsaking both (or at least forsaking 6s while putting HL on the backburner) to push this new gamemode while still being one of the biggest "voices" in a community that just seems like is becoming more and more out of touch with the rest of it as time goes on. I've said this in the past, but pandering to Valve will only lead to disappointment. If you want to try a new format, fine, but don't try to destroy everything that the community has built up on their own for over 7 years now in the hopes that MAYBE Valve will finally start caring.

They won't.

#14 Comprehensive List of Everything Wrong w/ Comp A:R in TF2 General Discussion
Teapot_I've always thought that A:R only does class bans just for the sake of it/because it works in other games, rather than a well thought out reasoning for why it is needed and would work in tf2.

There really isn't a good reason for it. The only reason that's ever been given for it is "Well dota does it and dota is popular so obviously this would make tf2 more popular/interesting." There's no other valid gameplay enhancing reason for it. Even Robin Walker himself has only ever given this reasoning to include pick/ban in a competitive TF2 format. There's absolutely no merit for it and pick/ban is never going to work in tf2 or make it more interesting. Not for classes or weapons.

#7 Comprehensive List of Everything Wrong w/ Comp A:R in TF2 General Discussion

I don't know why anyone thinks class bans in tf2 is a good idea. It works in dota because you're banning 10 heroes out of 100+ where in this you're banning 2 classes out of 9. This significantly limits the player's possibilities in tf2 because every individual class has a unique role. In dota there's always going to be carries, supports, junglers, and offlaners. Because of the massive hero pool, any player would need to be proficient with multiple heroes, and doing so isn't too difficult because many heroes fall into similar roles and can be played similarly to others as long as you keep in mind the unique quirks the different heroes have. A team can't simply just ban all of one role (and doing so would be fucking stupid anyways). This ties into Kevin's first point, in comp A:R nobody is going to know what they're going to be doing before the game starts because of this forced class ban phase, again this isn't a problem in dota because while players don't know what specific hero they're going to play, they almost always know what ROLE they're going to be playing before the match starts. That's why it works, that's why the pick/ban phase in dota is interesting, you know what roles the players are most likely going to play before the match starts, you just don't know what heroes they're going to use to do it.

TF2 doesn't have any of these qualities, in A:R all you have to look at is "What player is going to be the biggest threat on their main class? Ok let's ban that one." Bam, you've effectively fucked over one person and probably made the game extremely less fun, also you're taking variety out of the game because you've removed a unique role from the match entirely. Please stop trying to apply competitive dota mechanics into tf2, they are different games, they don't translate over well and they never will.
