#32 How do you study? in Off Topic

A few tricks I use.

I would build rewards into the studying. So, if you look over materials for finals for say 2 hours, you get to have yourself some sort of fun for 30 minutes or so and then head back.

The other thing I did was use vick's vapor rub. So while you study, slather a bit of that menthol scented junk on one of your arms (I use my non-writing hand). Then, before you show up to take your exam, put a bit more of the vapor rub on your arm - hopefully your brain has built of a significant association between the vapor rub and the information you were studying the night before. Sometimes I could even remember exactly what was written on my pre-exam sheets that I'd write out.

#7 never winter nights diamond (Free) in Other Games

I was a member of the ALFA project back in the day I spent ker-trillions of hours playing NWN and helping to build up the BG server. I doubt many of the persistent worlds are still up - but the single player (especially the expansions) are very much worth playing if you're a fan of RPGs.

#3 Arm position to avoid RSI in Q/A Help

What kawa said is generally good advice if you like playing with low-sens and are used to making large movements to get things accomplished. If you're more on the higher end of the sensitivity scale there are a few things you could look into.

1. Arm wrests on your chair - if you play with a straighter arm posture an arm rest can be really helpful.

2. Desk height. If you have to raise your arm significantly it can cause problems in your shoulder that - due to pressure on the nerve - spread down your arm. You generally want your arm to be parallel to the floor when using your mouse (with a straighter arm posture).

3. If you have to do a lot of typing tasks you may look into putting padding down for your wrists if you rest them flat on the table.

4. How you sleep. A *lot* of elbow pain can be due to sleeping with the elbow bent under you - applying pressure to the nerve in the elbow your "funny bone" as it were. This can occur if you're a stomach or side sleeper (on the side you sleep on). If this is the case experiment with sleeping with your arm straight and making sure there's no pressure applied to your elbow. This one in particular has been big for me - I used to wake up with numbness in my left hand a lot because i like to sleep with my left elbow buried into my mattress which was constricting the nerve in my elbow.

#33 help I am heartbroke in Off Topic

This all reminds me of a time in high school when my gf at the time asked if I'd take her out to eat. We spent like every day together after school so this was a normal activity. Anyhow, we pull into a drive up because I'm cheap, and there were like 4-5 cars in front of us. She became audibly frustrated and said something to the effect that I should pull out and go to a different restaurant so we wouldn't have to wait so long.

I, with zero hesitation, looked her dead in the eyes and said "patience is a virtue"

She sat in stunned silence for the rest of the car-ride.

#6 Mouse double-clicking issue in Hardware

No, that's what you'll want to clean/blown on - no need to try to remove them. I meant the plunger on the top of the mouse case (usually they're big, long, clear plastic pieces attached to the top of the mouse).

#3 Mouse double-clicking issue in Hardware

The most likely thing that has happened is that the contact is dirty. It's not hard to fix depending on what you've got on hand. There's no reason to worry about getting a new mouse.

Step 1. Take apart the mouse without breaking it - there should be plenty of videos on youtube that tell you how to do this - you may also have the manual for the mouse still which will also tell you how to take apart your specific model.

Step 2. Locate the contact - it typically looks like a little white grain of rice. The "plunger" piece on the top of the mouse casing should likewise show you about where it's hitting which will help you find the contact.

Step 3. Make sure it's not the plunger that's dirty - sometimes random bits of biological gunk can get stuck to the sides/end of the plunger and will make it sticky - and as such it'll cause the contact to trigger multiple times. So cleaning with a wet-wipe or mildly damp cloth should be enough for that.

Step 4. Having located the contact, clean it you have some options here based on what you have available I'll go from fanciest to least fanciest:

1. Contact cleaner - you can find it at any electronics store or also some music shops that deal in electric instruments. It should look like an aerosol can, sometimes with a brush on the end. It's usually not that expensive, but can sometimes be hard to find, and it doesn't have a lot of other uses.

2. Compressed air. Pretty common for computer cleaning, just put the blowy bit directly on the contact and spray for a good long while all around and on the contact. You could also use a standard air compressor with blowing tool to accomplish the same thing.

3. A straw. Be ABSOLUTELY certain that you don't have a bunch of saliva in your mouth when you do this, but put the drinking straw over the contact and blow several times all around the contact.

That should solve your double clicking problem.

It's also a good idea to clean the whole mouse in general - my guess is that mouse 4 got bad because those buttons tend to get *really* dirty and so it's contact prolly had trouble first, and then over 2+ years of additional use the main M1 contact got dirty. It shouldn't be a big problem. Most mice can last for *ages* as long as you know the tricks to fix them and you don't spill any liquids on them lol. I've had my trusty Death Adder since 2010 and it still works like day 1 (although I've had to mess with it a bunch) lol.

#9 How do casters see what the camera man sees? in Q/A Help

Typically an on-the-ball cameraman will *say* when the casters aren't looking at something the cameraman is looking at in mumble (since they've set it up so you can't hear them) that way we can catch ourselves being stupid. Usually that comes up with kritz switches and spy/sniper plays.

#459 2016 election live results in World Events

People are upset about the state of things and Clinton very clearly painted herself as the candidate of the status quo - they even drug out some old unpopular Republicans to back her up - that, in combination with her campaign's very strange decision to run on *her* as a person and not on policies, brought us the Trumper's surprise victory lol.

For once in my life I find myself almost agreeing with Schweppes lol. A lot of this Trump vote wasn't people giving over to calls for Race and Nation - they were voting anti-establishment - because these same voters came out for Obama in 08'. It's actually a big opportunity for the *real* left in the US to make its move, because 2-4 years from now, anybody who voted Trump with the hopes of real change are going to be sorely disappointed lol. The power of the presidency is not pervasive enough to enact anything really far out there, and the Democrats retain enough seats in the senate to filibuster any legislation they deem to be too extreme.

"Both choices are worse" to quote Stalin sums up this election quite nicely.

Trump was worse because he openly gave himself over to very dark appeals to racist tendencies and flippant opportunist declarations of obviously dangerous policy proposals (defaulting on debt and so on).

Clinton was worse because she obviated any chance for *real* change, is a cold-warrior and a hawk.

#19 gofundme for my dogs surgery in Off Topic

:( yeah if she's got a very free moving joint (in ways it shouldn't move - particularly forwards) rest recovery is probably unlikely since she looks pretty big in the picture :( Just keep on that rest. On the bright side the execution of the procedure is very easy so once it's done, after the long rest period, everything should be great :D

Best of luck :D

#14 gofundme for my dogs surgery in Off Topic

I do not in any way mean for this to detract from your efforts - but if it's only one bum leg, most dogs are absolutely fine on 3 legs (some on two depending on the size of the breed) so if somebody tried to tell you that putting your doge to sleep was the only other option they were absolutely 100% trying to scare you into paying them lots of money. You could absolutely let this go, and although your doggie friend would have a lower quality of life because of it (arthritis, bone spurs, other bad things) they would likely live a normal life. You may've gotten some advice from the vet already - but in case they just tried to sell you on surgery straight away. If you don't have one already you should invest in a/borrow a dog crate. Prolonged rest (I know it can be hard) can often greatly improve the situation and if you have a hard time keeping them calm in the house the crate is the only way to ensure that that rest is gotten. It will also absolutely be required after surgery - because there will be a fairly long period (at least 1 1/2 months) of rest required post-op. Sometimes you can even get *really* lucky and with a strict enough rest period the ligament will just heal itself on its own - particularly in small breeds and young dogs, or where the ligament is not fully detached (I could tell you how to check if it is if if you're curious or don't know yet), and since you're relying on donations it would be highly advisable to start doing this asap You can also reduce the swelling with doggie anti-inflammatories (hopefully you've gotten these already) which keeping that down now and in the interim pre-op will be great :D.

Why I know these things: My first dog tore his CCL (doggie ACL) when I was 8 and it was a complete rupture and was very traumatic because I was playing with him when he did it. His was a really arduous recovery because he was an above average sized labrador retriever and you couldn't keep him still ever for any reason lol.

I also had a dog later in life that had severe hip dysplasia in both hips (basically a non-existant hip joint). So she had to have double doggie hip surgery - the funny thing about dogs is that their bodies will actually generate new hip joints out of muscle tissue and they'll walk kind of funny afterwords because the "new" hip is rarely ever perfect, but they don't have any pain or trouble jumping/running etc. The only issue she had was that she would sometimes tip over forward when she tried to get up too fast because she needed to put most of her weight on her front legs for the first few months after surgery :(

All the same best of luck! I hope everything turns out great :D

#21 Custom stickybomb color/model? in Customization

You could just tell your teammates that you're virtually blind to stickies in grass when on blu and they should compensate for you - they should be looking out for that kind of thing anyways but it'd be even more important to do if your medic has trouble seeing them on certain maps. I wouldn't blame your vision so much as the people walking in front of you not doing/saying anything about a trap - even if you're a player who can see stickies clearly - typically if you're a med by the time you see them, and recognize what they are, you've died anyways lol.

It may even be helpful since I assume you've likely developed a movement or pathing habit that avoids green textures so maybe you've even got funky movement that attackers won't expect :D

#62 World Series in Off Topic

Every time a game 7 comes around, I remember my dad forcing me to watch this game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BT_MODis138

Because he said "it was sure to be good" I complained the whole time, but I did get to witness one of the greatest pitching performances in the history of baseball so there's that lol.

You'll also get to see a much younger John Smoltz lol

#20 All Nighters in Off Topic

This is my best story of a collegiate all nighter that doesn't include lots of illegal activity.

I took a physics class (BAD IDEA FOR SOMEBODY WHO SUCKS AT MATH) with two of my best friends who happened to be a Bulgarian named Georgi and a guy from Bangladesh who lived in his closet named Tapash. It was a Friday, we had this big project due that day at, according to the professor, 5 PM. However, we had inside information from a friend who was a physics major, that said this professor always left campus well before 5 pm on Fridays and that you could, in fact, drop off any projects or papers by sliding them under his office door at any point before 9-10 AM on Saturday.

Ok, great, the plan was we'd all work on these projects together to pool our resources, drink some Slivovitz in the process and then go out on the town once all was said and done. Great.

So around 3pm we get started working on this stuff. Take numerous "study breaks" to smoke cigars I'd bought for the occasion, play some Gran Turismo on the "x-station" that Georgi had built - it was a combination PS2 and Xbox lol. It quickly turns into about 7-8 PM before we actually got any real work done and finally we finish at about 11 pm.

So, the 3 of us march down to the science building to drop off our papers at the professors office. PROBLEM. The building is locked up tight. We call some friends who are nerds thinking maybe they're still in there. No go, can't get in the building. So, we decide if any campus security see us we're just going to claim that one of us lost his wallet earlier in the day while we start trying windows and other doors to see if they're unlocked. Eventually we find a window that will open from the outside, but it's one of those old style slat windows so the opening is VERY slim. Tapash thankfully was very skinny so we picked him up by his waist and inserted him into the window. He yelled out that he could open the door.

So, we throw the papers in after him and start walking to the door we'd assume he'd exit through. He opens the door about 2 minutes later and says that we're good because there were papers all over the floor in his office that he could see laying in there. JUST, then a flash light gets shone on us, and who is it but campus security. They ask us what the hell we're doing in the science building at 11 pm on a Friday night, we inform him, as per the plan, that there was a lost wallet. Campus security guy nicely opens the door for us, escorts us to the room we say we need to visit, no wallet is found of course, and we head out to find more mischief. I ended up not coming home until something like 10-11 AM.
