Good afternoon Yogrrt. It is very nice to speak with you again.
I would like to start by appreciating the recap of the previous discussion for those who were not present last week. I do think that conversation was a productive start to things, but I was concerned that it got lost, which is why this post exists. I do not mean to just rehash things in a different format, so I apologize for the wasted time for you.
I want to organize this well, but it might be difficult across the spread of posts. If anything is forgotten or wanted to be elaborated on, let me know.
yogrrt When we last had a discussion about this, I noted that this season and last season have been particularly rough for player numbers. I also spoke about how our staff turnover has exacerbated this issue, with both Pibble (Adv staff + Discord Staff) and DusterDan (Main + AM Staff) having to pull double duty just to get things done. I think they've both done an incredible job given their circumstances, and should anyone like to join and help, you are welcome to apply here.
yogrrt RGL runs off a revolving door of volunteers. If I had to wager a guess, most staff members across both formats stick around for maybe 2-3 seasons on average, with new staff being brought in nearly constantly (hah) season to season. This means that we need to be constantly teaching people the way to deal with situations, especially across divisions and formats. This point will likely turn into an action item for me, and I can certainly put something together to help onboard staff, but the effects of that won't be seen for a while.
The issues described here, with the loss of mid-level teams and last-minute placements exacerbated by a stretched thin administration, I understand. However, there is still a question of the series of events that led to this place, and how to avoid it in the future.
The following questions are not meant to be personal attacks toward the administration; they are meant to be reflective of the state of the league. Why is the administration being stretched thin? Why is administration recruitment at an all-time low? Why is there a consistent loss of veteran staff? Is it that the quality of the community that has been fostered over the years contributes to staff burnout? Or are their internal bureaucratic problems that make the organization difficult to function? In essence, why is it that RGL is not a league people want to stand behind?
I disagree on the issue of sandbagging being taken seriously because some tickets are placed to help handle it. The expectation is that the league handles placements appropriately, and tickets are meant to be for issues that fall through the cracks, rather than the division's players being responsible for their self-regulation. There are expectations when playing for a league that has skill level-based divisions that there are people responsible for ensuring fair play. Once again, this is exacerbated by the aforementioned staff problems, which I gladly accept as a reason, but not the source of the problems.
What is most pressing to me is the lack of clarity. It feels impossible to get answers to why decisions are made, what the goals of the league are, and why my and many others' complaints remain the same years after we voice them. If there is, to quote Arcadia, a sacrifice being made to keep the lights on at RGL, what is it? What is worth the loss of players?
