So me and carpet went back and forth talking about what was better, evil dead 2, or the original. Now I went back and watched the recent upload on Netflix (the version I had was mostly a dvd remaster in SD). Now I get people liked how the 2nd version was more humor based, but honestly, the horror was really impressive in the first. I mean if you really got deep into it, sat and watched with good headphones with the volume cranked, the sound design was creepy as fuck. The small details with the book haunting the area, I mean right in the beginning alone literally tries killing the group on the road with a major car accident. The sound of the chair hanging on the porch hitting over and over while the group discovers no wind was even around to cause it, they even went as far as to provide no ambience or creepy soundtracks over it, they just had the sound of the seat hitting over and over, loud as fuck, hinting the house was alive and inpatient, it’s anxiety for newcomers present.
Don’t even get me started on how creepy the first basement scene was, it reminded me of my youth, age 9 when back in my old house in Flint Michigan, we had apparently had a basement, a large crawl space under our house so you could work the water piping. We had huge issues one summer with our water and my dad tried working on it, we had a small 4:3 like door covered in on carpet, never knew it was even around until my dad ripped up the floor and opened it. He tried getting into the crawl space so he could see how our kitchen was loosing water pressure. In the end he was too big and made me go down and find out what pipe was fucked up. I’m talking huge dead spiders everywhere, webs, bugs I had no idea what kind dead on the floor, mold, shit growing on pipes. I lasted 10 mins before I screamed for him to drag me up worst part was he had a hard time reaching me and had to try climbing down and lifting me, squeezing me thru the tight space and getting nasty shit all over me.
This film, dragged every submerged horror that was planted In my brain. The animation alone was way ahead of its time, the voice work, the redubs, the violence, it was so dark and surreal.
The 2nd film captured this but it only charming. Your thoughts?
Edit: I did also really enjoy the remake of this version, it really captured what this was going for, the acting started off a little stiff but the rest of the film was pretty great. (Except that new intro, that shit was amazing).
