Not as big of a range as you think, I'd say high steel can easily keep up with mid open.

#37 You can do what you will but I guarantee the most effective way to improve is to focus on maps you can actually get a good accuracy on and slowly up the ante as you get more consistent. Going straight for the mlg fast maps is cool but at that point you're not really playing a rhythm game.
