#43 Monthly RGL Is Bad Thread in TF2 General Discussion

I am sorry for the long post. I've thought a lot about this, and I just want to put some points out:

You know what I never understood about bans is that if the first punishment is 1 month, then won't that lead to players leaving and not joining (in that respective division)?

Why would you want to ban someone for 1 month, disregaring egregious acts? What is the point other than, "Teaching them a lesson"? There is no good justification other than both your own satisfaction of banning someone and boosting your "numbers". Rather, consider smaller (2 matches, 1 week, 2 weeks max) first-term bans with compounding time afterwards? A great example of this would be the following:

I'm a bad person and I knowingly used a game exploit.
An admin bans me for 1 week (2 matches).
I don't learn my lesson; I again knowingly used another game exploit.
I recieve a ban for 2 weeks (another 4 matches).
...ect, doubling my ban time each instance

This results in me either learning a lesson that I shouldn't use a game exploit or it results in me becoming essentially permanently banned. 2 matches is already enough for some teams to get really screwed over, why would you want to increase that on the initial ban? If the acts of a single person means the team has to scramble to get someone to cover for the next few months or more, that kinda seems like a punishment to the whole team. Why would you want to punish the team? 2 ringers for 1 week I think is fine, but if the person keeps doing it then it may be likely that the team leader would cut that individual. This kinda solves the problem with people who keep pushing your limits, because eventually no team would want to play with that individual. Also, why is it that bans are always weeks or months late? What happened to consequences for actions? It certainly feels like you can go a long way before bans (Not talking AC here) are actually applied, thus giving the illusion that an individuals' actions were justified, until oops! We're banning you now for something that happened a week ago.

I also want to talk the topic of ban reasons. If punishments and their reasons made sense, then it would reduce the people 'targeting' or otherwise pushing your boundaries. Your boundaries could be as stiff as steel and as clear as glass, and people would still want to cross that line beacuse they want to see you ban players, like a joke. There's no reason to keep information from people for your own good. There is no reason to create long paragraphs of ban reasons. Instead, becoming more clear and specific with examples of rules (this is done, but not very much- I'll give some credit) broken will greatly help reduce the amount of times someone gets confused by a ban and makes it a larger deal than it should.

Consider applying different strategies to punishments, and you'll see a much greater interest in the league as a whole. Your whole reasoning and thought process is ran by a total of 3 people, and it's easily your weakest link. I really hope that with this viewpoint and GeneralNick's post that a goal is made to help reform punishments to actually solve issues that are being seen now.

#5 what's the best tf2 server provider atm? in Q/A Help

I third NFO. I've had very few issues with them, a good enough UI to work with, automatic updates, and generally just peace of mind that it is set up properly.

I think the price reflects this, but if you really do want a good server than NFO is where it's at. You probably could get a discount if you look enough too.

#6 is tf2center still as bad as people say it is? in TF2 General Discussion

You'd be better off playing in in-house pugs with dumb moderators and offclassers than try to play a game of TF2C, and you'd wait about a year for a game to even appear on TF2S.

#2203 mastercomfig - fps/customization config in Customization

If someone is asking a question on how to fix a problem in a forum, do you expect them to have knowledge in something advanced such as GDB?

Also, if TF2's console is 'unreliable', then why did the developers think it was a good idea to add it in?

#6 Best way to host a server? in Projects

You can host your own in the cloud, or use a provider (NFO, Tragic).

There could be someone in the future who will do this with more ease, but not now. Usually you rent an NFO and call it 6 months.

#5 Hosting TF2 with Docker in Projects
fastbin

2 is the best, 4 for mvm I think.

1 is risky, but for 1v1 I think its more than enough (private mge servers). I did almost run a successful pug with it however.

For the rcon issue, I may have some tools for server owners who need to manage many servers at once!

#8 Tf2 Problem in TF2 General Discussion
hgruntturbochad69Not sure exactly what the issue is, but make sure you have the latest version of tf2attributes, your sourcemod gamedata file is correctly set up for tf2, and your server is connected to steam
Source mod 1.11. I dropped it directly into the tf folder. I'm using tf2attributes 1.2.1 and don't know how to connect the server to steam.

SM 1.11 may still cause issues with some plugins, be warned. 1.10 has been stable. Try using 1.10 and seeing if it still breaks.

#3 Hosting TF2 with Docker in Projects

I've also been at work in the last year doing this:
https://hub.docker.com/repository/docker/c43721/tf2-comp
https://hub.docker.com/repository/docker/c43721/tf2-comp-rgl

Other community contributors:
https://hub.docker.com/r/gameservers/teamfortress2
https://github.com/tf2pickup-org/tf2-gameserver

You don't even need that much ram, I've ran small servers with only 1 gig ram, and some larger servers with only 2 gigs. DigitalOcean especially has great tooling for it, allowing you to create a droplet with Docker(compose) preinstalled and you'd just have to run your command. Most you would pay is $10 for a 6s server, any more you're wasting money.

I suggest those who don't understand servers to run docker, especially on cloud, since it is much cheaper. It however comes with huge disadvantage to not having the same tools (like rcon control) as opposed to an actual provider (NFO, tragic). Also, you will not have persistant storage for STVs, ability to easily add your own plugins, or easily extend configurations without previous docker exposure. However, if you're a server owner looking for just a server, nothing else, this would be your best option.

#9 The future of competetive gaming. in TF2 General Discussion
_flacMiG-21bisI am too lazy to do the math, but I think the main issue with ping is we are limited to sending information at the speed of light. I am not sure how much we can decrease ping with better hardware, it may not be much improvement at all.A quick Google search finds it takes just over 130 ms for light to travel the circumference of earth. This would be the worst case scenario in the best case scenario of 0 processing time.

Edit: The time for a round trip at light speed from chicago to london is just over 40 ms.

I suppose you didn't realize that copper wiring will perhaps slow down signals and won't be able to carry a high signal strength over large distances, and running fiber / optical to each and every house or datacenter is already expensive.

Just because light is super fast, doesn't mean our general connections are, and furthermore, the cost of going speedy is potentially millions of dollars.

DulZuroDoes anyone know what causes this lighting glitch on harvest?

https://imgur.com/a/BqW78tc

This screenshot is from mastercomfig ultra.

I first noticed it when using mastercomfig medium high, and tried changing some of the lighting settings but nothing seemed to fix this.
AimIsADick.

Not a bug, just is harvest lighting. I've experienced this in other configs.
