So my second pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro headphones just packed in after the first pair were replaced under warranty. Does anyone have any suggestions for similar headphones?

I really liked the 990 pros for comfort, sound quality, openness and their metal frame meant they felt really sturdy. I would buy another pair of them if my track record of them breaking on me wasn't bad.

I know a guy that can recable your DT 990s if you want.
99% of the time a headphone stops working it is the cable.
If not get DT 1990 Pros.
They are pricier than your 990s but they are a significant upgrade and have detachable cables.

I'm not entirely sure, but this time when they broke, it was like a bunch of the frequencies just cut out, is that a cable issue?

Yes. Same thing just happened to my ATH-AD900s.

I've tried both and Im currently using my backup pair of m30x, they're good headphones but I'd prefer something a little more open.

I don't own many Open Cans besides the DT 990 Pros, but I've heard great things about the Senheiser HD 598 SR as well as the Senheiser HD 660s but obviously the cost differences are there.

I borrowed a pair of Philips Fidelio X1s that were quite comfortable, there are the X2s but of course there is the price difference.

As Screwb said 1990's are the obvious choice if you liked your 990's. What's your budget?

At the end of the day you haven't given us any budget to give proper recommendations. For all i know you could want anything from $60 Philips SHP9500S to $4000 Focal Utopias.

If you like the beyer sound (warm with treble spike), I'd stick with something from beyer - if not another 990, maybe a 1990.
Budget though?

Also screwb makes a good point regarding cable failure

ballzyI've tried both and Im currently using my backup pair of m30x, they're good headphones but I'd prefer something a little more open.

In that case, if you have the funds, I would recommend the Sennheiser HD 600.

The HD600 is an excellent headphone but if you like the beyer tonality you probably won't find the HD600 all that interesting. Also it's not very open sounding for an open headphone tbh.

i just have some sennheisers hd 559 which are pretty cheap i think BUT you will need a 6.3mm to 3.5mm audio adapter since it has a pretty fat one

As a Audio Technica/Beyerdynamic guy i find Sennheisers to be lifeless and narrow.
It's preference but if his are similar i doubt he will like them.
