Black screen after alt tab/alt f4

If I try to alt+tab out of tf2, my screen goes black and I can't do anything other than hard shut down/restart my computer. The same thing happens when I attempt to close rocksmith 2014 with alt+f4 instead of going through the menus and hitting close. This is a big issue for tf2 b/c of editing configs or having stuff like pugchamp/mixchamp open or going to change mumbles. This only recently started happening. These are my software/hardware specs:

Windows version: Windows 10 Professional
Config: Felik's Config
DX Level: 98
Launch Options: -novid -dxlevel 98
CPU: FX-6300 Stock Clock (3.6 GHz)
GPU: MSI R7 250 2GB DDR3 Stock Clock (1100MHz GPU 900MHz memory)
RAM: 1x8GB DDR3 1600MHz

Any help would be appreciated, ty!

Does taking -dxlevel out of your launch options fix the black screen alt-tab?

dailyDoes taking -dxlevel out of your launch options fix the black screen alt-tab?

unfortunately it does not. Actually, just trying that I noticed 2 things:

  1. If I exit the game by typing quit in console, it also blackscreens
  2. If I alt tab back into the game while the screen is black, I can get back into tf2

gonna test right now and see if quitting by hitting the quit button on the main menu works

Might be talking out of my arse here but I think -nod3d9ex1 may help? I've heard a lot of talk about it. Note the distinction between -nod3d9ex and -nod3d9ex1 (the one that apparently helps).

what the fuck
I can't even ctrl-alt-delete
It seems everything is functioning when the screen is black, just that its ya know. black.
I was able to go to switch user and re-login and get to my desktop with tf2 opened in the background

It almost sounds like a graphical driver issue, since it's affecting different games not even on the same engine. I would try reinstalling them.

so now I can ctrl-alt-delete as a form of tabbing out, but not alt tab
windows button also works, though opening task manager wityh ctrl shift esc blackscreens it too

gonna try installing latest radeon drivers first and see if that helps

Ok so I reinstalled the drivers and defaulted everything and it seems to be working OK. I think this may have been caused by me playing with a custom resolution yesterday to pump out extra hz from my monitor. However today I was using the default 60hz 1080p resolution profile today so idk

this is what happens when you try to use single link DVI for 144 hz :P

I had this same exact problem in Windows 10, disable that Xbox DVR crap. It gets annoyed when you try to mess with your resolution.

Had it disabled since I got my pc, I don't think that was the problem. I have an ASUS VG248QE 144hz monitor but my gfx card only has single link DVI and HDMI 1.2 outputs, so I need to upgrade to get more than 75 hz, and even then I only get 75hz on low res 4:3 resolutions (like 640x480 like i was running). Playing was fine but windows sucks balls at that resolution and I'm getting a new GPU in the next month anyways so I was just testing out last night how viable doing that would be to get a little bit smoother gameplay.
