Thoughts on a '6s Open?'

I've had this idea kicking around in my head for a couple seasons now. I think it would be a cool idea to have a community run tournament with the prizes being ESEA fees and servers for the top however many teams you had money for. This could maybe replace the Newbie Mix teams KevinIsPwn was running (not sure if that happened this season). The pros of this being that you wouldn't be spending as much money and it would go to teams already doing well and less likely to die, and also that a tournament can get people more excited than just a team drive. The cons that I can think of would just be that there's less total teams being paid for but I think the hype around the event could convince more teams to sign up for esea anyways.

I don't really have any means of making this happen right now just wanted to know people's thoughts.

In Europe TF2C and ETF2L hosted the Archimedes Cup, which was basically this. It was pretty successful and had generous cash prizes for the top teams. I reckon it'd be a good idea to have more tournaments like that. The ESEA fee idea seems cool.

Kevin still does Newbie Mixes, but having something similar for higher level of play would be amazing. That's an amazing idea and I hope you get it running. I'd help if I could, but I'd be on the receiving end of instruction, not the giving end.

I played in the ETF2L Archimedes Cup last time, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be playing 6s now without it. They definitely should do another one.

well i have nothing really to add to this discussion other than this sounds like a really good idea because i desperately want more people to play this video game because there is a noticable lack of players. if this will bring more players then i am 100% all for it.

I definitely think letting people play 6s for free while still being in association with ESEA (hopefully) would drive more people to actually pay for it. A lot of people who play HL 1) don't know they like 6s until they try it, and 2) don't even know ESEA exists. If this got enough publicity it could really drive signups.

If a league runs a newbie tournament similar to Archimedes within a month of MM official release it could really serve as a welcome mat for these new players to explore a more structured form of MM. Definitely could be a boon.

You've got a few avenues for this with a few caveats.

- If you want to see such a tournament you should know that if it is going to happen you'll have to do most of the work yourself.

- I'd try talking to Tri - since at least in the past ESEA admins had some amount of freemium at the least to hand out you could try to work out a deal there to cut down on the amount of (donations I presume) money you would need to fund the winner(s). The same goes with server providers of course who may be happy to hand out a select few slots for the advertising.

- I would be happy to cast the tournament if you stream it

you are still wrong
he said "newbie mix teams" referring to the newbie team drive, not newbie mixes themselves

Add me, we'll talk.

This has a better chance of success if you use the existing base of newbie mixes sponsorship, expertise, and funding and I can help with that. You have the drive I've got your means.
