Constant ping spikes while playing.

So for the last half year or so, I've been having this issue where my ping will be very unstable while playing TF2. I can be playing on a Stockholm server (I live in Norway, neighbouring country to Sweden) and I will usually have a pretty decent ping (30 to 40-ish), but at random, my ping will jump up to like anything from 200 to 800 for a second or so, before going back down to the usual values. Once it starts, it will keep doing it every 10-or so seconds, for the rest of my session.

It does not happen every time I play, but most of the time. I've taken some screenshots of my netgraph while these spikes occur, and they seem to be different on my graph every time. Sometimes there is a gaping hole in the graph, some times there is a huge red and green wall.

See for yourself here:

Anyhow, whenever one of these spikes occur, my game will freeze for a couple of seconds, then catch up, and I usually find myself either dead or in a different spot, as the server has kept running while I was frozen.

This makes the game unplayable for me a lot of the time, and I was wondering if anyone else knew what I can do to maybe prevent this from happening.

Some quick info:
This happens in other games aswell, such as CS:GO and League.

I am not connected by wire, I have to use Wi-Fi, as my router is on a floor below my room.
(This probably is part of it, but I do not struggle with anything other than games. My internet runs just fine when watching Youtube, twitch, browsing the internet etc.)

The router itself is pretty new and has a solid download and upload rate, so that is not the issue at hand.

My Wireless connection card in my computer is right next to my GTX 970 graphics card, which I assume generates some heat. Might be having a hand in all of this.

Any help at all is highly appreciated!

are you using wifi by any chance. your getting choke and loss and extrapolation which happens when the game cant interpolate anymore it then has to guess whats happening. choke can be caused by the rate value being too low increase the rate value until you are under <10 choke my suggestion start with 128000 and lower it until you start getting choke at that point raise it a tiny bit more and then see if you dont get choke anymore i personally had 30-50 choke spike when im in a full server so i set my value to 128000 as for the loss it can be caused by wifi and your ISP if they are having some issues. if you use Wifi try changing your wifi channel and for extrapolation for me i was on 2.4Ghz wifi i was having pings spikes and lag i fixed/improved alot by moving my pc a bit closer to the router and changing the channel of the router and other wifi settings as i have a custom firmware. if possible use wired or 5ghz wifi if you can

The same thing was happening to me while I was playing on WiFi. Other games were fine, twitch/youtube were fine, only tf2 had issues. I tried changing the channel to one that only I was using, I tried playing directly next to the router, nothing helped.

The only thing that actually fixed it for me was buying a 25 meter Ethernet cable and connecting my pc directly to the router.

I guess tf2 just can't run on wifi

asking for a friend who has ping spikes but is there a way to add ping / fakelag

like say your ping spikes to 100 sometimes but you have 30 normally

can you like add 70 to when you aren't lagging so that you have a consistent 100, i know there's that fakelag command for offline

idk if this makes sense

I used to have this problem and it's 200% the wifi, entirely the wifi and only the wifi. Are you on a 2.4GHz or 5GHz wifi connection? (I'm assuming 2.4GHz but you need to confirm before we can go further.)

I do actually have 5GHz Wi-Fi connection, after checking in cmd.

heh, well going by wire is going to be complicated, as I have to move through my entire room, down one floor and into another room where the router is located. I'll see what I can do.

One word for you: Powerline.

Something like
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TL-PA411KIT-Powerline-Adapter-Starter/dp/B0084Y9N3O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461328409&sr=8-1&keywords=powerline
or
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TL-PA451KIT-Powerline-Adapter-Through/dp/B00D8BGLMY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1461328409&sr=8-2&keywords=powerline

Literally the best of both wired and wireless for a house.

Edit: Also, get a program like radar http://wifi-radar.tuxfamily.org/ or linssid https://sourceforge.net/projects/linssid/ or a similar program for whatever OS you use. You may be surprised what crap is on your local wifi bands. I was surprised to find a massive noise burst every 3 or 6 seconds that would temporarily kill the 2.4GHz band for half a second. You wouldn't notice this with a video or browser because the data link between your router and computer would "catch up", but it would affect VOIP and games. Turns out, at the top of our street there's a massive water pump that supplies half the village, and the motor in that causes all the noise, so 2.4GHz was never going to work and 5GHz didn't have the range to reach across the house. A pair of powerline adapters gave me an extra 1ms ping or something in exchange for a wired connection without breaking out my 10m cat5/ethernet cable.

Oh and don't bother getting anything but the basic slow stuff. You don't need the 0.5gbps stuff for gaming.

Also FYI, powerline is kinda wifi but rather than stick the aerial in the air, you stick it in the wire and get all the free shielding (super ELI5 version). It does mean in some cases your neighbors can get on your "wifi", but you live in Norway so I suspect you live far enough from your neighbors that you don't share a short enough power cable for the signal to reach. ;)

Well Powerline is quite stable but Wifi 5Ghz should be stable aswell considering you get good signals 2.4Ghz can and does make issues cuz of interference 5ghz isnt prone to this as it is a higher band and has more channels to choose from so it mostly dosent get any interferance but the signal is lower as compared to 2.4Ghz N wireless. ethernet is a surefire way to fix latency issues from you to the router but not everyone can do it powerline is good aswell dont have any personal experience tough.whats your router model perhaps try flashing a custom firmware if one is supported i flashed one on my cheap-o tp-link and my wireless 2.4Ghz works great after tweaking before with the stock firmware i was having alot of issues tough and i dont have many neighbour Wireless interference so i dont get as much wireless lag Try different channels flash a new firmware and then you can change even more wireless settings if they dont work then either go wired or powerline or just go that route if you dont wanna trouble yourself with the tweaking and flashing firmwares and stuff one last thing tough parallel match your antennas if you have dual antennas make sure one is facing side-ways while one is facing up

FireWell in my case the reason for ping spikes were auto updating android apps.

well he isn't just getting ping spikes packet loss, choke, extrapolation any auto updating app or download dosen't cause those a tiny bit choke <10 mostly and little bit extrapolation it mostly causes high ping spikes he has loss, choke, and extrapolation which indicates something else is the problem either with his ISP or WIFI could be the router aswell

Powerlines are also bad especially in norway as most courses arent connected. Deal with it or get a cable
