This thing is losing its edge and is having trouble booting, so I'm being offered a new one for Christmas. Any recommendations?

Preferably from Newegg or Amazon. My current specs are:
AMD Phenom II P920 Quad Core 1.6GHz
Windows 7 64-bit
Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series
DirectX Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
1366 x 768
Primary VRAM: 256 MB
4GB RAM
500GB drive

Would build a desktop, but I move around a fair bit at the moment.

You've gotta specify a price range and any other preferences you have. To establish a base line, I've heard good things about Sager (http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=products) and you can use their site to customize a build and see what it would cost. There are better prices out there, but this is generally a good indicator of what range you're looking at for what specs.

Are you hoping for an SSD or none?

I'd get something from here. I've heard nothing but positive reviews about them.

Where have you been hearing quotes from? People that paid them to say that it's good?

And for a laptop for myself I've personally been eyeing most of the ultrabooks as they come with SSD boot drives and the prices have dropped since they first came out.

Go to Newegg & sort the laptops by user rating, then filter by the price and specs until you find something you like.

I think Alienware is a safe choice. My sister and my friend have one and they've worked fine for awhile now. If price isn't a big concern, you might want to look at OriginPC.com as well.

Right. Preferably around $800, not more than 1000. Quality is more important than price, though.

SSD would be nice, but not required.

Please don't buy Alienware, you can get the same specs for half the price with an Asus/Sager/Lenovo/etc. You're paying double for some LEDs and an alien logo

Lenovo's will probly be the best bang for the buck. I got mine a few years ago and it runs bf3 and other games flawlessly. The only thing i would recommend with them is a program called throttlestop. It is for intel processors and prevents cpu throttling. You just set it to max multiplier before turbo and your set. My laptop is basically a desktop replacement on the go, it has been amazing.

those are pretty overpriced for the specs, your paying an extra 80-100 dollars for 4gb of ram +

I had a friend who bought a Lenovo. He's had to get it replaced 2 or three times now and has had a lot of issues with them. Every time they send him a new one it fucks up again after a few weeks.
