player and particles make your game run worse
the more things that are needed to be processed (i.e. flames and players and rockets) affect fps. you can improve your fps by using a configuration such as comanglias (which you can find by searching this site)

Source, especially in multiplayer environments, is a very CPU-heavy game that isn't multithreaded much at all.

Essentially, finding the processor that has the best performance per single thread, and clocking it as high as possible, will give you the best results for TF2.
