I heard some people say it helps while others say there's no difference.

Any opinions?

Also, if it does increase FPS, is alt-tabbing the only way to check steam messages from that point?

i think it helps depending on the size of your friends list.

There is a slight performance boost and alt-tabbing is the only way to check messages at that point

there used to be a huge FPS hit (talking 60%) when a steam (or any) overlay would popup, like a message. it hasn't happened to me in a long time, that might be what they're talking about. think it got fixed.

It used to be huge increase about a year ago, I don't think it's much anymore.

I think someone recently posted "test" results or w/e of steam overlay on/off and the difference was ~10 fps. Or I completely made that up because alcohol has destroyed my brain and liver.

If you go to your taskmanager you can see how much it uses when you are ingame.
edit: and i think (i think im not sure) that if you close your friendlist (so it only says "friends")it doesnt have to show what everyone is playing, so it doesnt have to update that much? (idk im stupid lol)

Sometimes, even when I don't get a message, I'd get a framerate drop to like 20fps for about 6 seconds. That was just when the overlay crashed for no reason, though. I think it has stopped now.

I was apart of 175+ steam groups from mindlessly accepting invites over the course of many years....

It was absolutely necessary for me to sign off when I played matches or it would fuck my fps. Since then, I got a new computer and removed myself from most the groups.

NOTE: why isn't there a "remove all" feature when it comes to groups? It took me hours to leave each group holy poop
