It's been happening for a while every start up for tf2 or so... any way around this? I feel like my steam account is pretty screwed up with graphic settings as well, but I'm more concerned on the verifying crap

I think this actually happened one time to me and i got really frustrated and deleted local content and reinstalled.

Ever since the Halloween update for me, same deal. Did both things the Steam Support article suggested: renaming that .blob file and refreshing the Steam installation. Still verifies on first launch.

I hear reinstalling fixes it, but 12 GB is a pain. Wonder if a restored backup would work...

Try letting it verify the files for a good amount of hours. Thats what worked for me, took over 3 hours.
