Hey guys,

I am new to competitive TF2 and I want to start playing Highlander. Anyways, I have watched many Fragmovies on Youtube and I want to try out making an own one. Do you guys have any general tips for the music or the frags or the editing? I only did 2 Pubvids with no editing, so I am very new to this aswell. How should I render/record my Videos (I know Demo commands and VirtualDub, but VD is lagging as hell, even at low quality settings). Thanks for your time and I hope my english is not too bad. Have a nice day.

This is tf2 which means that editing is not a thing. Just put clip after clip with some boring smooths here and there with some electro music.

Not gonna be that douche that says that there was already a thread on this but definetely make sure you read though some of these tips: http://teamfortress.tv/forum/thread/12576-what-do-you-like-in-frag-movies

Just keep in mind that you wont be able to please everyone with what you make so you're going to have to be good at taking criticism.

WhiteDo I have to have/use certain music? What about editing/syncing and that stuff?

Just be worried about colors, frags, and music. When I say music, I mean just be sure that the music matches the pace of the video - you do not have to play a Starry Eyed remix or something just because everyone else has.

Just remember that there's nothing wrong with simple edits, I prefer them personally. However, a mistake a lot of newcomers make is over-editing to the point of making an abomination.

I'd be excited to see your video when it's done, feel free to link it both here and in the "Frag Clips" thread.

I found a effect in vegas which brightens up the colors a bit (secondary color correction - strengthen the middle) for everybody who wants to see it. I thought this song would be ok, because syncing is not that difficult:

Please note that I am new to "good" fragmovies and editing or playing lobbies etc.

The players you are going against barely look like they know how to play comp tf2. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but most people who watch frag movies also care about the players you're playing against. If you're making a frag video of tf2lobby then you're essentially making a frag movie of a Valve pub.

There's no teamwork involved in lobby and most players have difficulty hitting a target making it not very impressive that you're able to get streaks on them.

Hi there,

First of all you said you are "new to competitive" if this is true then your frags are bound to be nothing special or out of this world, not trying to be an asshole but with the hundreds of fragmovies out there it's just how it is.

Second of all, lobby frags are generally very frowned upon by the competitive community as its viewed as a very low skill environment where there is no real communication and as a whole the players lack awareness and dm. It's better to spend a bit more time practising and collecting better frags instead of releasing a fragmovie with frags from such a low skill environment, alternatives are pickups, mixes, doublemixes, pcws, officials, etc... If you're in EU tf2pickup.net is a very famous pickup site which is a much higher skill environment and teams are required to use mumble for comms so its generally a good source for frags.

Also, regarding your intro, not sure which recording software you're using but if you're really aiming for the fragmovie feel I would consider removing the HUD elements as well as disabling hitsounds and ingame voice sounds, etc... Lawena is a great recording tool that can help you achieve this and also recording at the highest graphic quality settings.

Regarding the editing itself, well IMO you shouldn't worry about it in such a phase in your competitive "career". Generally the key is to have good colors, have a fitting music and frags synched with the music are a really good plus, but there's no magic key to a good fragmovie there are movies that work great with a more hip hop based sound, others use a much more lighter chill electro, it all depends on the feel you want to give the fragmovie but IMO it can work with a lot of different styles, you just have to worry with it having good frags and the synchronism between the music itself and the recorded clips mantaining a consistent style or view.

Honestly and from what I saw from your intro alone, I think you are getting your priorities wrong atm, you shouldn't be worrying about making a fragmovie so soon into your career, specially if that consists of lobby frags. If you really want to get into movie editing atm then I would advise to get some demos with really good frags and experimenting with it until you get the feel of editing a fragmovie. But be warned when releasing that fragmovie as is with lobby frags, generally they are looked very frowned upon as I said and you will receive really harsh criticism for it, not worth it imo.

If you're okay with criticism these are my personal thoughts on the video you just linked.

1.) The music is too loud. I can't tell if it was intentional to have no sound until towards the end in-game or if it was a demo problem, but I couldn't hear any of it.

2.) voice_enable 0 always for recording purposes.

3.) It's (mostly) a personal preference, but watching frags in third person perspective is almost always boring.

4.) If you're just doing frags + music it's fine to have your hud/crosshair/cfg that you use in-game. Otherwise, you're going to want to use different settings. Either the default or no crosshair, no damage numbers or easier to see damage numbers, etc. Use Lawena's recording tool and it will fix most of these problems.

Also, I'm not trying to be rude but these frags are really unimpressive. Again, I'm not trying to be mean but you should watch other frag movies to get a feel for what people normally think of as "frag movie material." Our Frag Clips Thread has plenty of examples of these types of frags. Since you play soldier, here's a few simply edited soldier videos to use as reference.

No one is encouraging you to give up, everyone starts somewhere. However, to further explain what Kaneco and I have said about "frag quality", frag movies are NOT someone picking out a bunch of frags from one or two games. Many frag movies are the culmination of the best frags someone has got over the period of a month, or a few months, or some frag movies have highlights over an entire year(s) - extending through multiple seasons and teams.

Also, I don't entirely agree with Kaneco and supercell when they say that lobby frags shouldn't be used. If you hit a triple airshot or some ridiculous across the map rocket, you can't belittle it by saying "oh it was just a lobby." If the frags look impressive, it's fine - especially if you're just starting out.

Definitely, forgot to say that. There are real moments of skill on lobbies regardless the lower skill environment and an impressive airshot or double airshot even in that case should be valued and is probably good fragmovie material.

Sorry if I seemed too harsh, its just I get the feel you are rushing everything and that you are worrying with the wrong things at the moment, if you really want to get into competitive then you shouldn't be worrying about making fragmovies at this moment, I have frags of a span of over 1,5 years playing competitively and I'm not sure I have enough fragmovie material for my liking just to give a perspective on things.

Im not saying to give up, its definitely not that, just interiorize the tips everyone has gave you on this thread, which mind you are really good tips overally and try to make the best out of them as you wish.

I know I still need to practice to get things in comp going well.... Talking about that, I would be happy if I could be as good as quad as scout or platinum as soldier... The strange thing is: I am decent on mge but I suck in lobbies/comp play.... long way for me

Don't compare yourself to the best players in tf2 when you start out. People don't expect you to pick up the game and immediately be the best in the world.

It's okay to be bad (trust me, I know from experience)

Its just stupid/shit... I mean I feel so bad myself. If I play sniper as main for example, after some time, I get bad as hell suddenly (dont hit anything etc.). I dunno if it is just me or if is is happening to others aswell, but is is really annoying. I addtion, my PC is behaving weird like shit: Phlog-Pyros and meet me the medic make my fps drop to >10 on lowest settings ( I have the * on high graphics). And after some time of beeing owned and not-hitting-something I get mag and frustrated and play even worse... I don't know ways to get better besides MGE, do you have any other Ideas?

I dunno if it is just me or if is is happening to others aswell, but is is really annoying. I addtion, my PC is behaving weird like shit: Phlog-Pyros and meet me the medic make my fps drop to >10 on lowest settings ( I have the * on high graphics). And after some time of beeing owned and not-hitting-something I get mag and frustrated and play even worse... I don't know ways to get better besides MGE, do you have any other Ideas?

If you are experiencing technical issues with your build that will definitely effect your play so I would recommend using a FPS config (which are configs tailored to make the game the most streamlined and smooth as possible by removing unnecessary stuff like gibs, facial animations, lower textures resolutions, etc...

Chris Max frames config
should pretty much allow you to play with a constant 100+ fps at all times.
