Need help editing? Ask away here.

I often get asked for help with editing. The problems vary quite often and I do my best to help. I figured instead of having people add me every time they need help, they can go ahead and post any questions here and I'll answer them the best I can, when I can.

Even better, I'm not the only editor that exists. There are other editors around (some who are better than I am) who are usually willing to help if they're not busy. There are also former TF2 editors who still visit here every now and again that might be willing to help. So while I made this thread primarily for people to give me a list of things to help them with & to give answers for not only them but for anyone else who might need help in the future, other people can also join in and help out if they want to.

So, there we have it. Ask away and I'll (and hopefully others) will do my best!

After reading this, I realize it sounds like I'm trying to tell people to stop asking me for help, but that's the complete opposite of what I want. Please don't take it that way!

[*] Go to your custom folder located inside of your TF folder
[*] Open "scripts"
[*] Open "hudlayout.res"
[*] CTRL+F & search for "huddeathnotice"
[*] Change "textfont" to a font that doesn't exist for the HUD

I'm not entirely 100% sure, but I believe this may cause what you're looking for. I know was sometimes a result of an update screwing up HUDs, but I think you can achieve it manually as well.

I'm not too good with editing HUDs, I only know a little about them.

Though it's not directly TF2 related, I'm having an issue with editing.

I can't get CS:Source to cooperate with smooths. It won't let me place the ticks. If you know what's up, let me know.

If you're using your own HUD, make a copy of it and make the necessary changes. Then take your copy and drag it into Lawena's HUD folder. You should probably put it inside of the "default folder", as the other folders might come in handy in the future. Select "yes" to overwrite everything.

If you're using a HUD that Lawena provides, then just make the changes in the files within Lawena's HUD folder.

#4 Are you sure you're doing all of the necessary steps before placing ticks? Open up the smoother, press reload, enter the start and end ticks that you wish to use. Then click "show processed" and then the pause button underneath it. Click "drive" on the demoui, then click and hold "make key". Move the camera/key to wherever you want to place the first camera angle/key.

If that doesn't work, let me know. An alternative would be to reenact the scene in SFM, but I don't know if SFM has a lot of CS models/maps, and I don't know if you're willing to search for them and learn how to place them in SFM.

But yeah, if that doesn't work, let me know.

Changing the color, I would assume. Not sure how to do that. Limited HUD knowledge.

is there a way to get my killfeed to look something like this w.o changing huds?

1.Open up hudlayout.res

2.Ctrl+f for huddeathnotice

3.Change teamred, and teamblue to a rgba value (red, green, blue, alpha) alphas transparency

4. Change BaseBackgroundColor and LocalBackgroundColor to a rgba value. This is the black and white background that appears.

Hope this helped.

I'm using KNhud currently and I'd like to just add a simple modification to be able to see the marked for death icon-what would I have to change to be able to see it (this is in minmode by the way)

Not really editing related but is it more time efficient to record, render and encode 3 different clips at once or to do the whole process for each clip individually? Obviously it bottlenecks at your disk read/write speed but I can't tell if I'm actually saving time without using a stopwatch.

What do you think about using AfterEffects as main edit tool?,do you think it's reliable or is better to combine for ex. Vegas + AE. I dunno, cuz with AE you can do some woopas 420 easy and nice effects, but at the same time some people say that the final result is not that great. I would like to know your opinions.

Sorry for bad english hu3hu3,ty.

It entirely depends on what you want to do with the finished edit.
If you think you can do everything you want to do in Vegas, there's no need to use AE.
If you want to use camera tracking and add 3d elements to the scene such as text that "sticks" to a wall or the floor, you should do your stuff in vegas first (velocity control, clip cutting, arrangement, sound, so that everything is how you want it to look) and export to lossless with resampling disabled -- then use AE to add your colour correction and other elements. At least, that's how I do it, because I have years of experience using vegas but only a couple months with AE.

Of course, if you're more comfortable with AE than Vegas and you think you can achieve a better edit by using AE alone, go for it. Experiment!

Earlier today I tried recording some old Medic Clips in Lawena and I noticed this zero popping up under the teammates I was healing. I'm not entirely sure but I'm guessing this is supposed to be displaying the teammates ammo that Medics can now see. I find it a little bit distracting and was wondering if anyone would know how to remove this. Thanks :)

Sorry, I was gone for a week. I'll see who I can help that has posted since. Will edit this post when I do.

#21 Are you using a HUD Lawena provides you with or did you use your own custom HUD?

#17 There's nothing wrong with using AE as your main editing tool. Some people prefer Sony Vegas (take for example me), other people prefer AE. Some people prefer using neither and instead other programs. There are a lot of things you can do in AE that you can't in Vegas, though a lot of those are excluded in the comparison when you're talking frag videos. Most of the stuff you'd want in a frag video can be done in Sony Vegas, which is why I prefer it. Plus it's easier to learn and has a nice, simple UI. In the end, it's up to you. Try both, see which one works better for you.

#16 I'm not 100% understanding your question, but are you asking if it's less time consuming to make one big video out of those 3 clips, or to make 3 videos?

#18 I'll will do what I want!

Not necessarily an edit question but I dont think its worth a thread..

So I have a 1tb disk and I have been recordinng stuff at 960fps to be relaly high quality and be able to slow mo without additional recording. Problem is, 4-5 clips later and I have already filled the 1tb drive D:

Do you guys usually have any workaround for this and how large on average are your uncompressed recorded clips ? Mine are 50-100Gb

I am using almies recording tool and when ever i record with only killfeed the hud still shows the chat box and voice commands for some reason. I check to make sure hudchat was off and it was but it keeps showing the chat.
