Half-Life 3 isn’t confirmed nor do we have any idea whether it exists or not, but we have an interesting rumour courtesy of the French site, journaldugamer, which claims that the game will be open-world.

This would mean deviating from the current formula a lot, and can also be an explanation why it’s taking so long.

“A trusted source who wishes to remain anonymous told us yet confidential details the development of Half-Life 3. According to her, Valve has decided to make his legendary shooter game … open-world!,” the website reports.

“According to her, Half-Life 3 FPS will always be a very action-oriented, but with many RPG elements: open-world, quests and NPCs will be waiting for you! One of the inspirations the developers would also be the series of Elder Scrolls (Skyrim, Oblivion).”

Whatever it is, we request you to take this information with a pinch of salt. But being Half-Life fans, you probably know nothing should be trusted easily by now.

Let's take this as a rumor, as it is so far. Thoughts? Like the idea? What do you think it'd be like? Will Gordon ever talk? Will Lamar get his own teddy bear?

I kinda want a linear HL3. Multi endings/scenarios always bug me story wise.

I wouldnt mind an "open" world, but im not so sure about large rpg elements and "quests". Im thinking sort of like Crysis 2 was, open world but directed story.

Doesn't really talk about that in there (unless you mean the Skyrim comparison).

But yeah, I'd like a more linear game too (if it works, why change it).

Could work, then again if this ends up being true (hope not) we would have to see what kind of RPG elements are we talking about here.

Almost every open world game seems to have multiple endings (that I know of). I also like the linear format of games because I hate making choices.

I really don't think HL3 would actually be RPG-esq. I don't think they'd mess up their formula just like that. Maybe a HL mmo that releases with HL3 (like how HL:E1 and E2 packaged).

who knows, valve always uses tf2 as its testing ground for everything (cash shop, keys etc..) Maybe the stats/customization in mvm is just a very volatile form of something they wanna try for hl3.

I'm not too worried though, when it comes out; it will be good. Thats just how valve does things.

It would be interesting to see Valve's take on the RPG. I wouldn't at all mind an open world Half Life, and that doesn't automatically equate to quests, which I wouldn't like.

I think they do need to add something to the game. As great as the series is, it could attract larger crowds with some of the good elements from today's age of games, leaving out the bad.

Another interesting thing to note is that when Portal 2 was released, they said it would be the last game with single-player as its main focus... I wonder what that bodes for Half Life 3.
