Just got Dota 2 today (thanks bl4nk) and I really have no idea what I'm doing. I like playing invoker, but apparently thats a hard character to learn on. Everyone has suggested skeleton king and some other "simple" starter characters, but I really prefer ranged heroes because I'm so used to sc2 micro.

I can usually pick up heroes pretty well (i've played like 4 games), but the item system really confuses me. I usually just buy the suggested

Anyone want to queue with me and tell me what to do through mumble or just play together for fun?

Add me on steam :)

Lich/Lion are easy ranged heroes to learn from because they can work without too much farm and provide a nice amount of utility.

Bsc is probably one of the best dota players I know, he was going to play EG for DOTA 2 but decided to stick with TF2. He'd probably help you out.

Also Maniac commentates professional dota games and plays at a pretty high level, add him or watch his stream at www.twitch.tv/maniac91

One thing that helped me a lot and I truly recommend is the in-game builds made by other players. Most of them explain what does the item / skill does and even what you should do with that build. It's really helpfull. It's the book icon on the upper left corner you should try it :)

since you said you like ranged heroes better id suggest lina or cm as good heroes to start with

other than that if you feel confident with your micro you could always try out enchantress or chen to get first blood every game

Having started Dota 3 months ago and gradually worked my way up from shit-tier to the tier with the angry Latin Americans (whichever that is), I've got a couple tips for you:

-You don't really need people to tell you which heroes to start with. Pick one that you like and play him until you're good enough to win games, then pick another and do the same. With someone like Invoker, if you are worried about not knowing how to use him in a public game, give it a test run in a bot game.

-Use the steam community item builds and read the explanations on the items and skills. This will make you seem like you know which items to pick even when you don't. Browse through the guides when you're looking for new heroes so that you start to understand the overall theme of the items.

I'll join the TF2 stack sometime.

Don't auto-pick a hero just because "that's you're main" or some shit, and don't commit the cardinal sin of randoming at a 4th/5th pick even if the 3 brazilians on your team slammed their heads into void/am/pub-breaker.

sneaky i have u added and i can give u some tips and play with you.
some tips already. find a hero that you like, what type etc, and branch off to heroes that are similar. then after you mastered a class/lane you should go play different heroes just to get backround knowledge. as for guides use www.dota2alttab.com, and you don't have to use the exact build, as most are situational. most item builds are pretty similar. and then you might want to read this:

I find Dazzle, Lich, Windrunner and Jakiro to be pretty fun and not too hard to get started on. Supports are in general easier to start with because nobody is counting on you to get last hits, and once you know the general ward spots, you're already doing an okay job.

I'm not very good, but I could totally show you the heroes I know and try to answer questions and such.

I ALSO HAVE NO DOTA FRIENDS PLS
