stringer_bellIf I had to pick just one, it would be Joyce's Ulysses, mainly because it taught me how to read beyond the words on the page. When I first started to "get" that book, it was a revelation.

i've never heard of anyone who has ever liked this book lol but i guess there has to be some1

infinite jest is fucking incredible

frknlamefxThe wheel of TimeI've always wanted to give this series a shot (I have the first 3 books) but I'm afraid to get into it because I'd probably fail out of school because it would consume all of my time

Yeah it's finished with 14 now, guy died writing them. Need to finish them myself.

I was born and raised in Ireland. There's a literal holiday where they read and re-enact parts of the book, and my parents would take me as a kid, so I was always sort of fascinated by the story. Joyce isn't easy reading to be sure, but he's really rewarding if you put in the effort. I'm surprised someone who appreciates DFW isn't able to see some of the vicious humor in Joyce.

Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic by Dr. Tom Holland

Gives a really great look at the period before Rome turned from republic to empire. It focuses on Rome's political history, mainly, and really gives life to the big figures in late republican era Rome.

This is an awesome thread. So much good writing already named. My favorite is:

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale

I liked it before I wrote my thesis on it, then fell in love with it while writing my thesis on it. I'll pick it up from time to time to read a certain chapter here or there. (chp 96 my fav)

It's just one of those books that once you get it, it becomes this recursive, ever self-defining, and self-redefining thing. Even the title. Very gnarly.

A Song of Ice and Fire series. It makes Game of Thrones the show look like trash imo.

Then when you finish the series go to reddit.com/r/asoiaf to find all the amazing shit you missed on the first read through. Don't go there till finished with the series obviously.

Go here also: http://asoiaf.westeros.org/

those are the official community forums for the series, I believe an editor(s) from the site have collaborated with Martin for fact checking on his world of ice and fire encyclopedia thing

Same rule applies, DO NOT go here until finished reading. They have "still reading" threads, but they only keep spoiler rules on the rest of the forums for up to 3 months after a books release, then if you venture off the still reading forums, you are screwed. Also, I would never trust a forum when it comes to spoilers. But there is an aspect of A Song of Ice and Fire that everybody must know if they haven't figured it out themselves, once you know it, or even the idea of it, the series becomes exponentially better and expands into a theory crafting sandbox. I'm dissapointed to say I didn't catch it on my own.

But read the books first or you'll ruin it for yourself. Also, if you are a TV show only person, you wont want to go here either. Maybe take a look at something involving the addition (because they show omitted these parts/clues from book 1 and 2 in the show, i imagine to keep it hidden entirely from tv viewers) of certain letters of the alphabet (ex. "A+B=C") that's it, and don't read beyond original posts or you'll probably find spoilers about later books.

my favorite book is probably hearts in atlantis by stephen king

other books that i loved would be the silverwing series, house of leaves, hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, battle royale, a series of unfortunate events, and alice in wonderland (and through the looking glass)

i'm a sucker for stephen king and have probably read about 70% of all his works including his nonfiction books lol

huge vonnegut fan.

Thank you. Vonnegut is great. My personal favorites of his are Sirens of Titan and Mother Night.

Infinite Jest was another one that I had to try a number of times to 'get', but once I did I appreciated it a lot.

Neal Stephenson is great for slightly less heady reading. Snow Crash is my favorite, but I also loved Anathem.
