Proposition: Mutual Mentoring for Spy Mains

Hello all of you aspiring spy mains!
I am Paals, a spy main in UGC Steel that is looking for new ways to learn about TF2 and the spy class. I have noticed a very small amount of spy mentors and demo reviews in TF.TV and UGC compared to 6's classes or other classes, and wanted to give and get some help in the community.

I am a very small-time streamer, and have been livestreaming scrims and match demos of myself for a little while now in the hopes that people would offer advice, but no one seems to be interested in doing so beside the vague "work on cloak management," or "aim better." While these things are important, they are not things that people look for mentors for, or submit demos for review for. Spy is a very conditional class, that can make all the difference in many situations, or can be useless in others, so such simplistic advice is not very helpful. There also seems to be very few streams for spys to learn from, as compared to the numerous reviews by Mr. Slin and Bl4nk and MANY others for other classes, namely 6's. And lastly, there seems to be a distinctive lack of involvement directly in review from the player being reviewed in most of the reviews I have seen.

So my proposition is this: a Mutual Mentoring Session with me and another aspiring spy(s) on stream. We would look at either one of my demos or theirs together and communicate over mumble/skype about what we are seeing, and discuss it. The goal would be to learn together about what spy can and should do, and discuss and find ways for both myself and the other participant to improve. This would be aimed at silver level spys and lower, as I am most likely out of my knowledge base in Gold and above. The stream would be used as it is currently in other demo reviews, with viewers asking questions/offering their takes on situations from the demo being reviewed.

This is currently just a concept, and I decided to post here and in the UGC forums to see if there is a general interest in the community for a mentoring session like this, as well as a stream to learn from like this.
If you have any suggestions or criticisms please say so, because I am very serious about improving my skills, and I know many other spy mains are as well.

I also could not fail to shamelessly plug my stream: http://www.twitch.tv/paals/new

Thanks for the read,
Paals

peer reviews is a pretty cool idea for spy mains. You can learn the stylistic processes of other spies, learn tricks you haven't, and maybe even find a person you can pal around with. Could be cool.

-6 and no posts with criticism :/

This is a pretty neat idea, but why limit it to just Spy? Even the 'sixes classes' are played differently in HL, if possible you should look into including all classes.

I'd suggest doing this kind of mutual mentoring in 6s too, but sssssecret sssstratssss

I had this thought as well. But since I play spy I really wanted to put this out there for spy. I also limited to spy since there are really only two or three streams out there for spy, and the biggest one (stabby stabby) is really just him pubbing for hours on end. I hope people take this idea and use it with all classes, and not just spy, provided people even like it.

@Bubberkill: glad you are happy with your signed crutch :)

Huhy has a done similar thing where he would get high level players from different classes to do mentoring sessions on different maps and he would stream them.

heres an example

I watched some of these, and they seem to be map/class reviews which have been done to death in tf.tv between seanbud's ESEA map of the week review with FT and MR. slin's and bl4nk's IM reviews, and cyzer's own reviews and SO many more. I am proposing a review that is
a) not invite level players saying how they play the game/how the game should be played.
b) trying to improve a specific person's skills with them directly communicating their thoughts and concerns.
c) more highlander focused.
d) a more entry level review for players.
Huhy's sessions seem to incorporate more of the viewer questions that I am hoping to build off of. While invite players certainly know their stuff, I want to have this be less of a lecture on playing the game but rather a discussion on what spy (or any other class) should be doing at any one time. A lot of the things that are discussed at the invite level will rarely happen in the lower leagues, so they are not very helpful. None of the things I am proposing seem to have been done before outside of UGC's Heinsight and Moose Tracks, which are not streamed and are really just map reviews.

Also so far Tf.tv has giving me more response than the UGC forums (0 replies), so thanks guys for being coolio about this :)
