Would overclocking my X6 1090T help my fps at all? I ordered a 120hz monitor, but now that I'm actually looking at my fps, I realize that it isn't staying above 120 most of the time.

I've tried everything I can with graphics settings, and nothing changes my fps because a 6850HD is more than enough for tf2.

I overclocked my 965 BE and received upwards of a 40+ frame rate increase

You are obviously a very intelligent and well liked person who gets invited to many a social gathering

Thanks, I guess I'll try OC'ing a bit.

Wow, that's a pretty tremendous increase. I have the same processor - mind telling me what you changed and what frequency it is running at now?

Just for reference I have a R6850HD with i5-2500k @ 4.2 and get consistant 180fps with dx9 configs.

Your processor is the bottleneck here.

if you haven't, try fps configs.

you got a 6 core, try cpu affinity and tie hl2.exe to the last 4 cores.

amd procs are good in their own right and can actually pull pretty hefty workloads, i don't really understand the hate

Your processor is the bottleneck here.

What dx9 configs are you using? My stock game goes down to 80-100 FPS with a 3770K @ 4.3GHz/1.175v w/ HT enabled, 16GB DDR3-2133 CL11 and an HD 7950 @ 1150/1500. I tried Chris' quality configs before and they seemed to make zero difference in my framerate. I play at 1080p/120Hz VSYNC with maximum video settings except for motion blur.

Try playing without bloom. You should be getting amazing FPS though, unless some random setting like multicore is off.

Alright, I'll try turning HDR off when I have some time to play. I was under the impression that with all the particles, items and crap added to the game over the years, along with a DX9 game engine with sort of "hacked in" multithreading just added too much overhead and there is too much frame latency in heavy battles, but I guess I might be wrong. Funny how the original recommended CPU was a P4 3.0GHz, but I bet you can't even get 20 FPS with one of those even with just a few players on a server nowadays.

Overclocking, fps config (lower sound quality) will definitely improve performance. The DX9 config helped the framerates on my AMD rig and the game doesn't look much different.

Also if you decide to overclock don't overlook Northbridge overclocking. Phenom processors respond well to an increase of Northbridge speed for gaming. Stock should be running at 2.0 GHz. Try to get the NB at least to 2.6 GHz, topping out at 2.8-3.0 GHz.

Any reason why you bought a six core over a quad? I bought mine specifically for being able to do stuff such as video rendering a lot easier.

I have the AMD 955 (3.2GHz) and once I got my CPU cooler I OC'd to 3.85GHz. I play on 1680x1050 medium settings/2x MSAA and get 200-400FPS, so AMD isn't all that bad for just $100. :)
