So, I was helping a friend of mine today with smoothing stv demos, and he said there is literally nothing on the internet anywhere about this, so I thought I would make a tutorial.

(As far as actually recording tf2 with lawena for videos, Kirby did that 4 years ago)

Step 1: Setting up HLAE with lawena

HLAE (half life advanced effects) is a source mod plug in for video creators that allows you to do all kinds of in game effects. The one I'm focusing on is mirv_campath which allows you to smooth source TV demos. In my opinion, this process is much easier than smoothing pov demos with tf2's ingame smoother. So, first of all, lawena (the basic tf2 recording program) allows you to launch your game with HLAE Here is how:. Once you have hlae downloaded, go on your lawena to Advanced > Launch Mode > than select "Launch using HLAE with -insecure". Than step 2, go to Advanced >Launch Mode > Select HLAE executable, this wants you to find your file named HLAE.exe. it should be in your "HLAE" folder you just downloaded. Launch tf2 and HLAE should launch with it.

Step 2: Learning the Commands

HLAE has hundreds of commands that it adds to tf2 for movie making, in this tutorial we will only be looking at 3. First of all, mirv_campath add. Mirv_campath add is used to create points for a smooth in stv. (note: it only works in STV demos). Once in your stv demo, make a bind. I use pgup, so I type, bind pgup "mirv_campath add", in console. Once you're at the point in the demo you want to smooth, open the demo ui if it's not already open (shift + f2) lower the speed of your demo and enter free fly mode. You fly around in realtime in your demo and hit the bind at a minimum of 4 times to create 4 or more keypoints to shape the path your camera will fly in. Once you do that, pause the demo and type "mirv_campath enable 1" in console. Than, reload the tick of the demo where you started smoothing and record. (Example, If you start smoothing at tick 100, you'd make your 4 or more points in the demo, mirv_campath enable 1, and reload to tick 100).

After you finish recording the smooth, type mirv_campath clear in console to reset.

It's really as simple as that, it is much easier than the lengthy steps of pov smoothing, and lots of people are oblivious to this feature.

I hope I helped

Smooth I made in like 20 seconds using this method. It's seriously 100x better than the ingame smoother.
