hey guys, are there any practical advantages to capping fps with fps_max? if so, how would i figure out a good value for doing so?

it's for keeping framerate consistent. If you benchmark your PC with fraps or etc,you can figure out what average/minimum framerate you get during typical conditions and then cap your framerate to around that value. That way your frame rate doesn't fluctuate which may/may not throw off your game.

I used to cap mine. Then I decided to uncap it to see if there was a difference. Uncapped seemed to make the game much smoother for me.

I've been wondering if its better to cap my fps at 121 to match my 120hz, or to leave it uncapped going from 300-500

capping your frame rate also means your computer doesn't have to work unnecessarily hard and consume excess juice and generate extra heat.

On some jump maps i was getting 700-1000 up and when i jumped i would jump less of the ground and faster making harder to rj. No clue why

because the orange box engine is fantastic, setting fps_max to ANY VALUE except 0 will result in some engine/input stuttering and in general just doesn't feel as smooth as if it was uncapped

the only downside to capping your framerate is that it will fuck with mouse accel (if you're using it) and it really messes up the physics if you host a local server

anyone who isn't using mouse accel should probably set fps_max 0

Not sure if this actually works to prevent stuttering, but I remember grape posting this.

I was about to post it again too. But yes MSI afterburner has a hardware cap on your fps so the game won't stutter when you use it. Also as a side note, I use a mouse accel driver that's not fps dependent and functions like quake accel from what I understand. I'll link it later, I'm on my phone right now, but it's called moudrv for anyone interested.

I've always heard that you should have your FPS capped at your monitor hz doubled. So for 60hz it would be 120, and for 120hz it would be 240. I don't notice my FPS stuttering, but would uncapping it make a difference?

I've always capped TF2 and UT3 @ 72fps. For whatever reason, those are the only 2 FPS games that the movement feels weird at super high frame rates....it almost feels like my aim doesn't line up to the movement of my wrist. I still use 120hz on my monitor and i benefit from the added smoothness, but movement to me feels more accurate at that cap.

I play other FPS games however (BF3, QL, Warsow) all uncapped and movement feels fine...so go figure. This is one of those "it's all about personal preferences" deals. Best advice is to mess around with frame rates and see what works for you.

Just like bhop in CS capping your framerate at certain values can give you a big advantage when rocket jumping.

is it weird that i read it as: "Public Fapping" just because the thread above it was named public apology
