I'm looking for a way to obtain TF2 before the Christmas update so I can work easier with demos and not have to chance my game crashing. I need an older version of TF2 (probably non-steam if it exists anywhere) that's able to replay demos from within the last year, maybe last 6 months.

this version apparently is from 2010-07-01, you can get newer versions, they won't download as fast as this though

I've been working on this since yesterday, though my connection speed took a dive so it's been slow going.

I'm using DepotDownloader to download TF2 exactly as it was before the Mecha update; same method I saw used on some L4D2 forums after a demo-breaking update. I'll post a guide on how to do it when I see it working, but I can't upload or seed atm so it'll be DIY :/
