Hello,

I'm sure most of you know the little ordeal with dx8 and crashing in regards to TF2. Well, I had the same problem, and patiently waited for valve to address and fix the issue. Just recently they released and update that supposedly fixed a lot of people problems, or so I've heard.
Just like everyone else, I downloaded the update and expected my TF2 to be back to normal. Unfortunately, the crashing still persist, and I'm absolutely dumbfounded as to what the problem could be. Forgive me for being so long winded, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

So hear are a few details of whats been going on.

1)About 1 month ago my Tf2 started crashing erratically.
2)Heard it was a dx8 related issue, so I waited just like everyone else.
3)During the down time I tried this.

This temp fix is working for me atm.

1. Add -d3d9ex in your launch options
2. Go to your steam folder > steamapps > (yourusername) > team fortress 2 > h2l.exe
3. Now with h2l.exe right click the application file and go to properties.
4. Go to the compatibility tab and tick disable visual themes and disable desktop composition.
5. Now in your autoexec.cfg file add the command mat_disable_d3d9ex 1

4) This did nothing.
5) valve releases update.
6) Back tracked and deleted everything I did in #3.
7)Downloaded update, crashing problem is still as persistent as it was before.

One last thing. I am able to play maps like tr_rocket_shooting when I launch them from console. Whenever I play on a server, tf2 crashes. Also, every time Tf2 crashes, I hear a sound supposedly coming from my hard drive. Something like this - "click* click* Click* eep*". Once this happens, I have to manually shut of my computer because everything freezes. Ok, Sorry again for the wall of text, I really didn't know how to elaborate on this issue without it.

Edit: How would one simply reset Tf2 to "Factory default" to say the least?
