I have the g400, and i have no idea what you mean by it dying early. I have no complaints with mine.

I have had my Deathadder for almost a year now and has yet to fail me. I have tried the mx518, g500, and g400 and every time i switched back to the deathadder. Very comfortable, great sensor, and is built like a tank. Though it is alittle out of your price range it is worth saving for.

im pretty sure the g400 has a 3 year warranty so if it dies early on u, u can still can get it replaced.

I had an original mx518 until the cable died in November 2011. Picked up a g400 and used it with glee until it died from the same issue in February 2012. Logitech replaced it free of charge. The replacement began having scroll wheel issues in November 2012. I've gotten two replacements since November for this scroll wheel issue and still haven't gotten a completely functional unit. That's how i ended up with 4 g400s in about 1 year. I would go for the g400 if you're patient enough to wait for a replacement if you get one from a bad batch. If not, i'd recommend picking up something else.

The cable issue isn't that big of a deal, logitech will replace it and while you wait for it you can open your broken one up and replace it with the 5-pin usb mouse cable from almost any other logitech mouse (m100 is like 10 bucks) using this guide: http://www.overclock.net/t/1138037/fixing-the-mx518-cable-problem.

A description of the scroll wheel issue is linked here for perusal: http://forums.logitech.com/t5/G-series-Gaming-Mice/G400-Scroll-Wheel-Problem-need-help-choose-another-one/td-p/876666

I bought a Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical (WMO) 1.1a off of eBay for like $10. For your price range, you could get that or an Intellimouse Explorer for cheap on there too.

Honestly if you are looking to spend around $30 your only real option is a WMO 1.1a

If I were you I'd hold on to that money and save up a little more and get a deathadder or zowie am.
