This recent wave of "donation drives"

Hello TF2 community,

I think this current idea of a donation drive for every little thing that some prem / invite player wants for themselves is disgusting.

It all started off as a lovely idea to get the American teams to compete in international LANs and I have donated to have that happen in the past.

But recently we have teams asking to be sent every which where (i.e. Epsilon Dreamhack), players asking for people to buy them a new computer, TFTV add ons asking to be sent to events.

Seriously what the fuck is going on, how about people think about actually working for themselves and earning something. How about you earn your own money to pay for the things you want before begging others.

I agree with the idea that nobody is forcing anybody to donate.

If the community agrees that it's insulting and unethical and greedy and whatnot, nobody will donate and that will be that. If someone is obviously just milking people unfairly, I'm sure that will come through.

Or, if some people do want to donate, they will and that's their choice.

Now if somebody begins flooding the forums and Twitter with a new donation request every single day, that becomes a problem and is a different issue. Or if somebody obviously doesn't use the money in the way they stated, that's another big problem. But a donation drive in and of itself isn't wrong.

You have a valid point that people should work and earn for themselves. But some donation drives come in light of situations where people have come into some bad luck, etc. financially. I think specifically of my recent one, and the one dashner did over a year ago. Everybody's different.

I feel like someone had to say something before they became even more prevalent. I feel that in the past they have been worthy causes, however more recently I feel that due to the success of these things people are now trying to take advantage.

Also saying "financial hardships" doesn't really cut it, if you are struggling to make ends meet the last thing you should be doing is buying a new PC or trying to go abroad, how about spending that time into looking for a job.

people have been complaining about this for years, you arent pioneering this. Theres like a 1:1 "need money" to "why are we giving people money" thread ratio.

Do you not like streamers too? Considering they ask for and accept donations.\\

Edit:

Also what qualifies as an "unworthy" donation cause recently.

I agree with ya in some ways. Having paid my own way fully to all the LANs I've been too and knowing that other people have without having jobs it does kinda disappoint me to see some people doing such things when I know they are better off and could pay themselves.

LAN is a mixed bag because it has been going up in price every year, hotel accommodation is pricey and with the costs of travelling to and from the place afterwards it's a complete shit show financially.

Constantly begging for donations is definitely scummy, but no one constantly begs for money here. No singular person ever constantly begs in the tf2 community.

Streamers as a whole definitely "beg" for donation money.

Idk if I saw people just begging for money constantly I would agree with you but every donation drive I've seen has been for content creators/members of the community needing some help, which I'm not forced to donate to either.

LAN priceys are def going up in costs, as someone who has paid the way for every single LAN they have been too, and being part of a group of mates (I didn't go) who paid there own way to attend an American LAN I just don't accept this "it is expensive so I should ask for money".

This is called managing your own finances, people don't get to do things they cant afford, that is the incentive to either get a better job or get a job so you can do the things you enjoy.

I completely agree that people can spend there money on whatever they want and there have been worthy causes for people to donate too.

I just feel like people are seeing the success and are now trying to take the piss.

this i can agree with, if you have expensive tf2 items and shit and you need money your first step should be to sell that shit asap.

lethargistno ones forcing you to donate

same kind of logic is the reason why payday 2 community had that massive uproar when devs added microtransactions, by that time they realized they can release any shit and people will buy it because "nobody is forcing you it's not a mandatory", the overall quality is drastically lowers when there's no barrier for shitty content in a form of strict rejection by the community
