So it seems that my game will be completely black if I start in fullscreen. The game will still be running, (I can connect to our teams server by pressing ` and typing in the alias I have, etc.).
This is a big problem for me as I do play on 4:3 stretched; I cannot play in windowed with this res.
I found out if I kept my original '-dxlevel 98' in launch options it will open without being pitch black, but with a very low brightness:

Pretty sure this should display "visible/not visible" tabs. Not sure never fucked with gamma before.

If I alt tab, when I go back into the game it's pitch black, but still running (can shoot and stuff) so I ctrl+alt+del.

try reinstalling your gpu drivers and using a different dxlevel.

So in case anyone else has this problem, I updated my drivers, and switched dxlevel to -dxlevel 81 and kept it in launch options.
It won't work otherwise. It's slower than usual to alt tab still but w/e it's playable.

its a contrast issue, not a brightness issue. i tried it all.
