Online activity clogging my internet

So this has been happening to me for a few months, I have random huge ping spikes, from 60 to 500 ping and back to 60 and sometimes only spiking between 80 and 110.

Whenever I have any page with a youtube video open or any stream open or any streaming or video playback site open my internet will start to have huge lags and ping spikes, even spotify affects it albeit lightly. I am pretty sure its this because all it takes is to open a youtube video while ingame and watch my ping spike to 500 and back to normal, and back to 500 or 100 or 200 or whatever it feels after that.

I was using a wireless connection through my desktop all this time and I figured it might be it, but today I finally got a cable long enought and linked my pc through it and it looks better obviously but this is still happening.

Anyone had problems like this? Figured a solution? Is it my router problem? THe internet itself? Im pretty sure my pc is clean and set up properly because Im kinda tech savvy and its a few months old pc anyway.

What's your internet plan? If it's really low like mine, then the only solution would be to upgrade.

I only get 2.5Mb/s down and this happens to me. I can't watch a youtube video without my ping going up to 800. Opening a web page causes my game to pause until the page loads. Literally any internet activity fucks with my ingame ping.

It especially sucks when Steam downloads a client update. No way to pause/stop it until it's finished.

My internet is literally the worst on the planet(240kb/s down + wireless) and that doesn't happen to me :o

I'm not very well-informed when it comes to the stuff, but getting a better router fixed this problem for me, I still get some lag spikes on wifi, but they're barely noticeable.

It's pretty standard, I have a slightly higher speed on contract but the actual speed that gets to my home is about 8-10Mbs Mb/s Download, 0.7-0.8 Mb/s upload. Which is why I find it so strange.

I actually work for my ISP so I'm kinda up to date with this stuff, and I got 2 different teams coming over in the past and they couldn't find anything wrong with my whole installation.

Murow is probably right.

Depends on how you have your web browser set up and how many connections it opens per one web page, there is a possibility that router can't process them all "in one piece". May cause bottleneck effect on your connection.

I had the same sort of issues. I just installed DD-WRT on my router and gave myself (and TF2) top priority. That fixed it for the most part.

Browser set up is pretty standard and I am running firefox but as I said it doesn't happen only with it, it also happens with spotify which rules the cause to be either the pc, the router or the internet line itself, I had 2 teams coming over to check it and they didn't find anything wrong :( could be the router malfunctioning but they didnt find anything

The router of this ISP is proprietary software and because it's a triple-play with IPTV service it doesn't leave many options to update or change the firmware without breaking tv service I think

Even if you are connected through cable, your router can still be the problem. I had a problem like this and the only way I solved was connecting the cable directly to the internet modem, skipping completely my router. I had to disconnect my wi-fi when I wanted to play anything online until I got a new router.

Its a modem/router all in one http://www.zen.co.uk/userfiles/documents/shared/broadband/hardware/thomson-tg784.pdf same as that one but one even older model.

And it can't be replaced because around here they are owned by the ISPs and use proprietary firmware and only they can change them, guess I'll have to insist there's something wrong with it and get someone to replace it with a newer model

Get a server IP and type "ping IP -t" in CMD and show the results to the ISP technician to prove them how the signal is inconsistent.

Update, got a new technician over here.

They swapped my router/modem and apparently the problem is semi fixed, now when I load a video or something else online I notice my ping spiking but only up to 100-110 not 130+ and abnormal 500 ping spikes. So its semi-fixed and it seems it was partially the router, the rest is just the line itself that is old but that is only fixable by changing to fiber.

I streamed yesterday as well and everything was much better than usual even while streaming
