I think X & Y was made with competitive battling in mind, and therefore they wanted to make less focus on actually grinding for creating a competitive team and more on actually battling with a competitive team (as seen by Super Training for EVs). While that means while you're a bit overlevelled for the game playthough, it means a lot of time saved in the long run when making a team for online battling.

Agreed, especially because of the steel/dragon nerf and these in-game mechanics. I'm pretty exciting to see some big tournaments with the new metagame.

"Smogon Tournament X - November 25, 2013" Hopefully this will be played on Gen6!

Also, rip jirachi :[

While this is true, IV mechanics stayed the same with no in-game way to manipulate them. I'm not sure how they could implement this, but I think that ultimately IVs are a bigger barrier to competitive Pokemon than EVs.

Having Destiny Knot on one of your parents while breeding will allow up to 5 31 IV's to transfer over to the baby.

In an expert display of personal control I just picked up my copy today, as last week were midterms and I knew if I got the game, I'd blow off my exams. Seems vastly different from the last Pokemon game I've played, as the last copy I owned was Crystal.

Nintendo has made competitive pokemon extremely accessible to the masses. Love it!

except for the fact that they still didn't bring back auto-level 100 battles.

After reading this thread and all the posts, alot of nostalgia hit me and now im craving to get.the game. Should I get an emulator for pc or buy a DS and pokemon? What are the pros and cons of the two, and if I were to get an emulator, whoch one would be optimal? Sorry if I sound idiotic, just looking for outside opinions.

Well, if you want to play X or Y, you cannot use an emulator as there is no 3DS emulator.

If you don't care what version (even though you'd be playing a version no one else is now), then an emulator would work fine, but you wouldn't be able to use any wi-fi features. I don't know much about DS/GBA emulators, though.

Just one guy's opinion, but between your request for nostalgia and a stable emulation I think both the recommended DeSmuMe and heart gold will suit you nicely.

You should not be posting illegal links on here please :)

It could get this thread locked or you banned.

TwinqeEdit: They have scaling to level 50. The effect is the same as if it were 100, so battling is still accessible even if your pokemon aren't max level, assuming you have EV trained them.

You're pretty much bang-on with that, but if we want to get kinda finicky with numbers (and hey, this is a Pokemon thread) I believe the 50 flat battles slightly skew stats by one or two points: something to do with the 252/252/8 spread being halved. In short, there's an optimal way to get EVs for flat battling and another optimal way to get EVs for standard play.

Again, not something to be awfully concerned about but it's there.

Also, yeah, try to avoid posting links to ROMs and the like. Regardless of whether or not you agree with intentions of posting it, the fact remains that it doesn't belong here.

Well, last night I caught a shiny Lairon and a shiny Lombre within 10 minutes of each other. I thought they were supposed to be rare?

if it was in the friend safari, i think they have a higher chance of being shiny there, because the first trapinch i saw there was a shiny (its also the third shiny trapinch ive ever gotten in pokemon haha)

While this is true, IV mechanics stayed the same with no in-game way to manipulate them. I'm not sure how they could implement this, but I think that ultimately IVs are a bigger barrier to competitive Pokemon than EVs. Honestly, it takes me less time to EV train traditionally (power items, pokerus) than with the new system, so I'm not sure how much it helps. While a way to visualize EVs definitely helps, if they were inclined to make competitive pokemon more attractive to people, changing the IV system is an absolute must. As an experienced RNG manipulator, it's really not a lot of fun having unalterable, invisible stats.

However, I think GF did a great job on limiting power creep this generation, and that will hopefully be a good thing for the standard OU metagame.

The biggest change with the IV mechanics is the Friend Safari. Pokemon in the friend Safari are guaranteed to have 2 IVs of 31. That's why Ditto friend Safaris are so popular. With a combination of this and the destiny knot trick shown above, getting a Pokemon with 31/31/31 or even 31/31/31/31/31 is much easier than in previous generations.
