Save a backup of it and reinstall tf2?

I honestly don't know if this will work or what it does, but you can opt into a beta called pre_jungleinferno_demos-. I haven't tried this but by the name it would seem like it is a fix. Worth a try though.

if it's a .dem file and nothing was done to them, you should be able to open them up again when you reinstall tf2
just back them up someplace that's not in your tf folder just in case, and then put them back when you reinstall

on the other hand, how did your tf2 uninstall itself with the files still in the tf folder? sounds like a steam doesn't recognize your installed game to me

yeah, back your demos and cfg up, but this has happened to me like 8 times, where as soon as you try to reinstall, steam grabs onto your tf2 folder and is just like "my bad"
