the identity crisis of 2v2 mod

to me, 2v2 consistently delivers an actual satisfying experience. its too much fun to be a dead mod. it deserves a chance but its dead as fuck and populated by pubbers fucking around wasting everyone's time. the mod currently is really raw and uncut but it has potential. im trying to get down to the bottom of this, but i cant come up with an actual reason to why is it that bball, dm mod servers, ultiduo and mge mod are played on hundreds of public and private servers but 2v2 is only ran on like 1 public server. why is that way, idk. imo i find 2v2 valuable because it offers an experience that i cant seem to find elsewhere in other game modes :/

i could get into the reasons of why its valuable but that depends what you are comparing it to. you could compare to either training mod servers like dm mod or mge OR you could compare it to other successful 2v2 modes like ultiduo or bball. training tool or not, fun is subjective and you can still have fun in training mods. ulti/bball are not played specifically bcs its a training tool. yes ofc its useful, and does have a high skill ceiling but its nothing you cannot already recreate in dm or mge . so in that case the way im going to organize this is into,, can be played in a tournament vs cannot be played in a tournament. (this is one way of looking at it, but this was just my guess) Besides fun, maybe people play ulti/bball because it can be played in tournaments and has an endgame. which gives it meaning or purpose to play it; a motivation. of course, dm mod and mge are not played in tournaments and for many reasons, "winning" is somewhat arbitrary and there is no endgame in training mods .

in these relationships you have to ask does 2v2 fit into either of these categories. 1. Is 2v2 an adequate training mod? (imo its a straight downgrade from dm/mge in terms of working specific skills) 2. Does 2v2 have an endgame or enough purpose to be played in tournaments? (imo winning and losing in 2v2 is a little too arbitrary because there is no right strategy or meta, which makes it less meaningful. so it cant be taken seriously in a tournament. i think maybe that could be why there arent tournaments. no tournaments means theres nothing to work towards so no players).

ulti/bball is skill based and your actions do have consequences, can be taken seriously, --> tournament
2v2 mod is too flawed to be played tourneys. no endgame, winning/losing is somewhat arbitrary. the flow of the game resembles a training mod, cannot be taken seriously.

so whats the point? when i often watch tf2 streams in the evening, i think i can see people getting a little tired of the same stale routine . maybe some people want a little more variety . 2v2mge is flawed but it might be fixable. for now itll still be fun but not too serious. and maybe thats the way its meant to be. but it has potential to be something more

should 2v2 be further modified to play more like an actual game? what changes to the gameplay would be beneficial?

I think 2v2 could be a really fun format outside of mge if there were specifically crafted maps for it, maybe smth like koth with fast cap times and instaspawn, idk. But also idk who would put in the effort to make and balance such a map/mode.

there definitely have been mge tourneys in the past lol idk what you're smoking

KEVCHEVof course, dm mod and mge are not played in tournaments and for many reasons, "winning" is somewhat arbitrary and there is no endgame in training mods .

afaik in order to win mge you have to be the first to reach 20 points (or 50 points on some servers)

KEVCHEVyea ofc 20 but mge tourneys in general are kinda dumb imo

you're entitled to your opinion but to say they are not played in tournaments is objectively false
edit:

KEVCHEV1. Is 2v2 an adequate training mod? (imo its a straight downgrade from dm/mge in terms of working specific skills) 2. Does 2v2 have an endgame or enough purpose to be played in tournaments? (imo winning and losing in 2v2 is a little too arbitrary because there is no right strategy or meta, which makes it less meaningful. so it cant be taken seriously in a tournament. i think maybe that could be why there arent tournaments. no tournaments means theres nothing to work towards so no players).

just because you don't know of any meta or correct strategy doesn't mean there isn't one
habib for example likes to do 2v2 in between pugs (or used to at least) and there definitely strategies as to who to focus first (generally you want to kill the hitscan player first because they are best at cleaning up and killing both of you after their teammate is dead, so scout before soldier or shotgun soldier before demo)
nobody is preventing you from hosting a 2v2 tournament or hosting another 2v2 server it seems like in general people are somewhat disinterested (aside from the few people who do 1v1 in 2v2 servers when they don't care about score/points) and a lot of people just have 2v2 mge mod hosted on their own private server so randoms don't come in and take badlands middle or whichever arena they want to play

2v2 MGE is one of (imo the best way) the best ways of practicing dm and focus fire but its a forgotten method of doing so, such a shame. As long as you don't think the score represents anything (which it doesn't because certain pairs of classes are supposed to beat other pairs of classes) and you play to practice, it is the fastest way of practicing 6s like dm situations. One thing that needs to be fixed is that some servers have a 3 second countdown before each round starts, it allows people to get into positions that are unfair, and ruins the practice.
