turtsmcgurtsi've had comcast for just over a year and a half and haven't had any issues whatsoever. I pay for 50/10 and get anywhere between 80-100 download from ~10pm to 6ish am, no bandwidth cap, ect.

Um excuse me

a specific monthly data usage threshold of 250 GB/month per account for all residential customers

i don't have a bandwidth cap. when I moved here I was initially told I would and it would be 300gb, but they never brought it up to me. The first month I did research and found that many people go over the limit without consequence, so I tested it myself. First month was when I had to reformat twice and decided to watch all of Rome and Spartacus, so I decided to get the massive uncompressed blurays. I went over the limit by 200 something gigabytes, nothing happened. since then I have been over the limit all but once without any extra charges, emails or phone calls.

When I hit the 300gb mark I get a message in my browser telling me so, they just don't enforce it. I recall seeing a message on my comcast account panel saying something about the cap not being enforced, or only in certain cities (Nashville for sure). I took a picture of this on my phone is hopes that it would be enough to play stupid to them on the phone if they did decide to charge me for the extra bandwidth, but I have changed phones since. :/

edit: this sounds about right. I remember making fun of my friend who lives in Nashville and also has Comcast. http://bgr.com/2012/09/18/comcast-300-gb-bandwidth-cap-tests/

https://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/internet/data-usage-trials-exceed-usage

In order for our customers to get accustomed to the new data usage plan, we will be implementing a program that gives you three courtesy months for exceeding the data usage plan amount in any 12-month period. That means you will only be subject to overage charges if you exceed the data usage plan amount for a fourth time in a 12-month period. On the fourth time (and any subsequent occurrence), you will be notified that you have exceeded your data usage plan amount via an email and an in-browser notification, that an additional 50 GB has automatically been allocated to your account and that applicable charges will be applied to your bill. Once you have incurred charges for exceeding your data usage plan amount, you will automatically be charged $10 each time we provide you with up to an additional 50 GB of data.

Enjoy it while it lasts

I've been over the limit for exactly 12 of the 13 months I have had Comcast, and have not been charged extra. I honestly don't know what more to tell you without going super gay and showing you the bills, lol.

I believe you, I just wouldn't mistake their ignorance for benevolence. I'm pretty surprised given how shitty they treat their Seattle market.

HueyLewisDave_HueyLewisI'm tired of getting shitty ping everywhere because of routing from Wowway. The only other high-speed option in town is U-Verse. Any good or am I doomed?get a vpn and you can fix that. EarthVPN is $4/mo. I haven't had any issues with packet loss/lag with it.
How does that work exactly? I would have thought that would just cause more lag.

basically (an oversimplification) you send your traffic to the vpn and then it sends it to the server(s).

And yeah, it can create more lag, but honestly, I played on a vpn in college and played pug.na with it, no ping issues whatsoever; didn't really see a huge increase in my ping either. As long as you connect to a server that's within two or three hundred miles from your house, you're fine. Worst case scenario is you're out $4.

comcast is literally the worst corporation that currently exists on earth and your anecdotal evidence to the contrary is useless at best and actively harmful to those you recommend it to at worst

that is why I suggested he give it a try himself before claiming it's going to be worse than what he already has. who knows, maybe he has already. pls stop this conversation, it's dumb

edit: welp, nevermind that last part completely. purely out of coincidence I found a thread on reddit very similar to this one, even with a great and up-to-date picture. the datacap is and has almost always been suspended in the vast majority of areas, only enabled in select cities (ie what I said earlier). it will be global in ~5 years, but that's not a reason to use them now while hoping somebody better comes around in your area.

I seriously don't get how US ISP's get away with this, they always seem to charge so much for the speed you get, and then I still hear people complaining about how often their internet just dies for a few minutes out of nowhere..
Must suck.

I have the same experience with turts about comcast. I go over my limit all the time. I go to the comcast page for my account it says they are not charging for going past that limit.

please kill me now

to be fair this is the basic "pro" package for like $30-something/month.

also you will want to use a third party router. the motorola nvg510 that came with my package is a piece of shit, made worse by the underwhelming configuration options. mac filtering literally doesn't work for me most of the time.

So I have no real solution unless I move out of town is my conclusion. U-Verse *might* be better but sounds like it's not worth it to get into a 12 month contract to try.

Maybe I'll bring my machine into work and play on fiber. I could play on our 50 foot HD projector too...

Try to figure out if your area is served by VDSL2 or ADSL2+. You should be able to tell what type you're on by the modem they provided you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT%26T_U-verse

If you're on VDSL2 you're totally fucked. If you're on ADSL2+ you "can" call att, get them to switch you off of interleaved and onto fastpath. That SHOULD improve your ping. You will have to jump through hoops like never before to get it done. IIRC 800-288-2020 is the tier2 support number. You could also try the ATT direct forum on dslreports, they're much more helpful than calling customer support.

For those in the greater bay area consider switching to sonic.net fusion. They provide bonded ADSL over att lines with better pricing for the speed. I have heard nothing but good reviews about them. Shame my area was too far from their CO.

For 50 down and 2.5 up, I pay around $95 a month (~66 euros).
That comes with a 300 gb data limit a month and horrible routing.

I used to have Uverse, but it would crash for like 15 minutes at a time every few hours, so I switched ISPs.

These result images are misleading, the way they label it made me think megaBYTES, not megabits.
