Crashing on damage in DX9

Basically whenever I deal any damage to an enemy when running the game with mat_dxlevel 90, 91, 95 or 98 the game crashes. I normally use a high frames config (pretty similar to chris's).

Build: EVGA GTX 660 Ti not overclocked
I5 3570k not overclocked
Windows 7 with Aero disabled

also happens on my laptop, a second generation MacBook running Windows 7 with Windows Classic theme.

Can anyone help me? Thanks

play medic

;)

edit: jk I really find this weird though tbh. Do you HAVE to play with those options? Have you tried just running normal ol' Chris config instead of one that's similar? You can try and test it out and then look for differences in the configs to see if one of those things could be causing it.

have you tried using another hud/reinstalling your current hud?

Thanks for your suggestions, but for some reason what fixed it was doing the launch option thing instead of using mat_dxlevel, probably silly of me to not try that earlier. Just out of interest does anyone know why is it recommended to take the -dxlevel xx out of launch options after first launch?

the game remembers what dxlevel it is set to and having the launch option makes alt tabbing shit

source engine logic

Like ayr said, the dxlevel command will reset your options, so you only launch it once with that command.
