Quality Single Player Games w/ Short Stories

Honestly, do you prefer quality games focused on single player experiences? Over the last 6 years I’ve had a few games that felt amazing provided what they offered as a single player experience. That game was Scorn. A prior game, something that wasn’t graphically intensive was Dark Woods! The game itself was rather short despite its many endings. I was looking at scorn, they do try to provide a solid quality experience that felt like a old school Resident Evil game. But despite going back and re-doing entire chapters after failing major puzzles, the game itself did feel really short. That game itself focused on visual shit more then anything.

Personally I want Atomic Heart to be fucking amazing, I will prioritize this game’s original dub just like I would for metro exodus. If the “remaster of current audio” included better voice acting / sound design (the sound gets fucked on 5+ sound systems!”) the would be better in that way

Also I did reach out about an idea of Zeno Clash getting remade through Source 2 under Ace Studios. That might happen. A lot of resources from that game could be easily remade or reused with better texture subs

Idk what you've played so I'm just gonna start sayin shit. I also don't know what really constitutes "short" fpr you either so I'm just throwing some shit out.

Disco Elysium is arguably the best and most interesting game to come out in recent years and I think everyone should at least try to play it through once, especially since they released the final cut and everything is voice acted. The setting, writing, visuals, world-building, and overall presentation of the game is incredible and IMO unmatched by and major release in recent years. I think the game is roughly ~20hrs or so.

Outer Wilds was also a very good game, though not super story heavy per se. The game is primarily exploration based and it's pretty engaging. The DLC for it is also very good. Main game + DLC ran me about ~25 hours. Go in blind if you play it.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl is also very good. I don't think that game is very long either, I have about ~17hrs in SoC and I enjoyed my time playing it. (I also recently read the book the game was based on and would recommend that one as well.) If you're about playing the game in it's native language there's a good like community patch mod that changes the spoken language back to native with subtitles + bug fixes and shit.

Titanfall 2 campaign is short and sweet and fun. The story isn't like mind-blowingly good or anything bit it's a lot better than it should be for a multiplayer focused FPS game. Could probably beat it in 1 sitting. That + the Northstar private server shit reviving the multiplayer makes it worth getting IMO.

Undertale if you've never played it. I only played the game through once and it took me like idk like 7 hours to do the true pacifist ending. One of the best games made in the 2010s.

I've never played these games but I've heard good things and intend to play them soon. Spec Ops: The Line and Return of the Obra Dinn. I've heard the gameplay is a bit dated in Spec Ops but the story is good. AFAIK neither of them are super long or anything.

If you're looking for a very brief narrative focus, I can't recommend both Night in the Woods and Vall-Halla enough. Even if their art styles aren't your thing, they definitely have stories worth telling. I bought Spiritfarer with this in mind and have been putting off playing it since like February, but I'd definitely say to give this one a try as well just off of precedence.

If you're looking for recommendations for this type of murder mystery thing still, you should try Contradiction: Spot the Liar. Yes it's FMV jank, but it's really well-done and I remember liking it a lot.

Outer Wilds, the best video game I've ever played. The only downside is that it's a game that you can only really complete once (or twice with DLC). The game can be pretty short depending on how invested youi get in to the story.

The Stanley Parable is a good short game, you can be done with it whenever you want to really.

Superliminal is also a really good short puzzle game based on forced perspective and illusions. Really trippy at points.

Return of the Obra Dinn a very unique gameplay experience.

Black Mesa the HL1 remake. Really good 10 hour game. Very high quality remake that makes a good improvement on the first.

Ultrakill, EA boomer shooter with lots of cool mechanics.

I've been rpg pilled super hard recently. the original 2 fallout games and underrail are great if you value the actual role playing in rpgs. for something slightly more modern vampire the masquerade bloodlines is basically fallout new vegas but with vampire races

Virginia is pretty short and interesting, however since other people are listing games that last over 10 hours so I think I can recommend both Hotline Miami games. Devil Daggers is a single player arcade FPS but I found it pretty fun again recently

What Remains of Edith Finch if you’re not averse to the “walking-sim” genre.
The Forgotten City is a pretty good puzzle adventure game based on a Skyrim mod
Inscryption for sure

I played a game called "In Passing" recently, took just under twoi hours to beat. It's a very short 3d platformer with narration throughout, I found it enjoyable and it's free on steam.

based danganronpa/ace attorney/zero escape enjoyer. v3, T&T and 999 are the best games out of those trilogies imo.

there's that inescapable game coming out that's supposed to be very similar to danganronpa, it's western. i dont think it'll be good tho.
i've played a bit of AI: the somnium files, which was created by the same guy who made zero escape. i need to get back into that game, from what i played it seemed decent.
i played half of 'your turn to die', didnt really get into it that much tbh

Limbo is great and will take you a single digit number of hours to beat most likely.

Going to heavily second Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium, they take a bit of investment but both are unforgettable and completely unique games.

Slay the Spire is the best rougelike I've ever played. It's actually balanced well lol

I bought scorn, I have been waiting a few years on this one, I knew in the back of my head it was gunna be good. Dug around for reviews, it’s been compared to a tanky (mostly due to movement speed and how punishing combat is) version of early resident evil games. About 5 hours long if you know what you are doing, but the save system is brutal and can leave you redoing shit constantly. For me, considering the atmosphere of the game, the details alone, it’s worth it. I expect to find myself digesting the game itself, what it has visually alone, whether I like it or not.

do not every play "Emily is Away" or "Doki Doki Literature Club" they both fall into the trope of "deconstructing" visual novels by means of making the player character entirely unrelatable and unlikable.

if you're willing to try rpg maker games there's a good number of cool little games.

thinking of things like Ib, LiEat, Mad Father, Yume Nikki on the creepy/horror side and Rakuen and Eternal Senia for other genres.

Eternal Senia is more rpg and less puzzle.

Armored Core: For Answer.
A lot of it is open to interpretation and the translation isn't always the best but the gameplay is what got me into movement-based games.

i JUST finished a game called Beacon Pines(the credits are still rolling on my tv) and i want to give it a hearty recommendation. fun little mystery game about a few kids exploring the weird stuff going on in the town. features plot points you can revisit with different actions a la radiant historia, and a system of words that you can find and go back to older plot points and use to get new scenarios a la the gbc/gba hamtaro games. great story. not perfect but it had soul and i loved it.
