If there was ever a season for mustard to break his curse of never winning an IM playoff match it’s this one. Assembling a scary collection of Top IM and Mid Invite talent this team not making finals would be a surprise. Them making it with mustard may be another story altogether, as the last time mustard assembled a roster this strong he was cut from the team in the 4th week after they went 7-0. On paper this team has the best medic, best scout combo, and best soldiers and should roll over all but the very best teams in IM with ease.

Medic:meyy
Froot, ex, and mae are back after the failed gay weaboo experiment that was dog2. They are joined by Vari, who will be making his first appearance on a team actually expected to do well. He’s been a consistent fragger in pugs and mid IM but playing as part of a team with good players requires an entirely different mindset than carrying bad ones. Meyy is their choice for medic, who along with making this team a nightmare for potential casters will also be one of the best medics in IM this season. Finally is glider on roamer, another player with a history on decent IM playoff teams. This team is mostly strong all around, if there is anything that will stop them it’s weaboo overload or Vari not being able to fit into his role, but if he does expect him to be one of the best scouts in the division.

On paper this team looks a step below turd noises and meyymeyy’s, but they seem very dedicated to improving and I think they will turn heads this season. Mc being removed from his normal hangout of pug retards can only be good for him, demoted has long been insane at every class, and catface has been making quite a name for himself on scout. Megaboy and Kryptonite are two newcomers to IM, but I haven’t heard anything but good things about them. Exile rounds out the roster, and even though he has only played demoman previously, he has a solid head on his shoulders and should do fine.

Pocket:KTB
Demo:vaati

Considering they are taking the core of an invite roster into IM, some people may expect this team to do better than I have them ranked, but there are some major red flags in this roster. I think people may tend to overrate Keith, while he is a solid scout I see him struggling against some of the top IM scouts this season, though I would love for him to prove me wrong. In a similar vein, I think dagger is the weakest roamer on the list so far, while he’s been around forever he seems to have trouble breaking pas an IM skill level. That’s not to say this roster is weak, I think vaati was by far the most improved demo last season and I see him being the only person contesting Mae for the title of best demo in IM this season. I also think dflame may be a bit underrated; if he can get comfortable in a pocket scout role he’s capable of putting up some crazy numbers. That may be tough, though, as KTB has a reputation for being a bit of a heal vacuum and xattu has a tendency to make some mind boggling mistakes on medic.
Players to watch: vaati, dflame

Paradise Cafe
Scout:Stochastic
Scout:Spamfest
Roamer:SpaceCadet/kairu/yosh
Pocket:june
Demo:Max
Medic:Radeon
The Sparkle Gang is back again this season, maintaining June, Spamfest, Stochastic, and Max from last season. They will be moving Stochastic back to scout and adding Radeon on medic, while they are still continuing tryouts for their roamer spot. This team’s biggest advantage has to be cohesion, as they have lost their DM carri in reimu. While there isn’t a standout player on this team, I do think their success will hinge on Stochastic being able to reach the peak he hit in S16 and has seemed to elude him ever since; also very important will be june’s ability to step into the pocket role she has never seemed fully confident on. Even if all of that happens, a drought of top IM roamer talent is going to leave a big weak spot on their roster unless a miracle happens.

Scout:Link_1012
Roamer:phorofor
Pocket:cloudmaker
Demo:safrix
Medic:tiptoes
Featuring names familiar to anyone who’s paid attention to IM on heavy classes and some more unknown names on scout, this roster is an interesting mashup of old and new. Phorofor will bring his knowledge of high level game play to the team, and while roamer may not be the best spot to do it from marmadukeGRYLLS proved last season that it’s entirely possible. Safrix, who played a few matches in invite and won none of them last season is still a very strong demo, and cloudmaker always seems to do well regardless of who he’s playing with or what role he’s on. RockMonkey and Link_1012 are both new to IM, but with the talent they’ve attracted there must be something special about them. I’ll remain skeptical of them until I see a few solid performances against proven players. Tiptoes has been around for a while, and this season will be a good test to see what he’s made of.

Egg Salad Dressing
Scout:Thaigrr
Scout:bunnymonster
Roamer:aim
Pocket:blew
Demo:sandblast??
Medic:lee
First things first: This team has a lot of individual talent. Whether or not they can use it is another story entirely. Thaigrr, an EU soldier will be making his North American debut, as well as his scout debut (as far as I’m aware). He’s been putting up impressive stats in pugs, but they may not mean much as even if this team does scrim it’s unlikely he’ll be willing to stay up until 5 AM every night to play TF2. bunny is another player who’s always seemed to do well in pugs but has had trouble adapting to a team setting, but look for him to drop some crazy plays on both scout and sniper. Aim, though he has played roamer in invite, has never been a standout player on the class, and it’s hard to see him putting in much effort this team. Blew also has not played in quite a while and a lack of scrims could mean he’s not even in form until the season is coming to a close. I believe sandblast is on demo for this team, which makes him the 2nd pug lord scout on this team. What happens when a pug main scout is put on demo in IM? I’m not sure but I don’t think it’s pretty. Lee rounds out the roster on medic, and having never played the class outside of open I see him having a rough time. This team honestly has trainwreck written all over it, but their individual skill could allow them to take matches off the teams above them. At the very least it puts them solidly above the rest of the pack

Scout:Percy
Scout:Troopo
Roamer:Reflecto
Pocket:Procreative
Demo:Campy
Medic:fabulous
A good playoff run last season sees the departure of emperor, faust, and sail. While I see percy as an upgrade, losing faust and sail for campy and procreative is a massive hit to this team’s potential. This is by far the weakest combo in top 8, but if anything will be their saving grace it’s their scouts. Troopo seems to have already fallen into a “I have no brain but must frag” style of scout that should get punished by the better teams in the division, but if he can reel it in he and percy make a formidable scout combo. Fabulous is a med who seems to get talked up quite a bit, but nothing I’ve seen from him has been remotely impressive. Reflecto is the player I admittedly know the least about so I’ll just make something up: I see his creative bombs digging this team out of trouble quite often, and I think he will prove himself to be one of the better players on this team.
Players to watch:Scouts
The weak links: Combo

The rest of the pack
Beyond here things get a bit dicey. I don’t see any team that stands out as clearly better than the rest. Scruff and the Mcgruffs has retained their carry in Moy and added Moof of mTs fame on scout. wUt dUdE fields uber and bwelp, two scouts who I think could surprise a lot of people this season. Nukular Stratigery fields the weakest roster I think I’ve ever seen out of a Jaguar Fiend team but he always does seem to put up some interesting results throughout the season. I’m mentoring milters so I might as well mention them, but to be honest I don’t recognize anyone on their roster. With my unfettered TF2 genius to guide them, however, anything is possible.

Matches Of The Week https://play.esea.net/index.php?s=stats&d=match&id=7728219

Paradise Cafe vs mae and the meyymeyy’s
This a match that could be mirrored in playoffs months from now. There is a clear edge for mae, as I believe they outclass Paradise Cafe on nearly every class. However, there is one equalizing factor in this match:

http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/884127922003481592/52FBFDCB51D5464051C12B823605EEA70200188C/

Yup, the engineer unlocks allowed this season could turn Intermediate into Spamfest’s playground. If mae can’t get this insane engineer main and his rescue ranger or minisentries under control, well then they’d best run for the hills.

Egg Salad Dressing vs Waddle R Us https://play.esea.net/index.php?s=stats&d=match&id=7728212
This is a great match for many reasons. For one we will get to see Thaigrr “farm IM noobs” but also it will put Waddle against a team with the raw DM of any other top IM team. If they can’t contest a team that is basically an all dm pug team then their chances of beating a team with both good dm and good coordination look bleak at best.

The TF2 update means that one of the two matches I was interested to see the result of didn’t end up happening, and the other match I wanted to see saw spamfest and co. piledrived into the dirt and left there to die. Luckily there was one match that didn’t go the way I thought it would as Not Around Bears embarrassed moon in a match that left me wondering who ever let Dagger into invite.

#1- Running From Mustard https://play.esea.net/teams/85721
Scout:Blues
Scout:yimi
Roamer:Rekuso
Pocket:Deathy
Demo:mustardoverload
Medic:Skye
As embarassing as dropping a round to YipYapper is, I’m not willing to move this team down based off one lost round on gullywash. In a surge to try to stay on his own team, Mustardoverload is currently both top damage and fragging for his team. Considering it was two rolls on gullywash this probably doesn’t say much besides that he didn’t try to spawncamp his own last, but still, good for him.
The pounders(s): Mustardo
The dead weight: Too early to say

#2- mae and the meyymeyys https://play.esea.net/teams/144649
Scout:vari
Scout:ex
Roamer:glider
Pocket:froot
Demo:mae
Medic:meyy
They faced somewhat tougher opposition this week than mustardoverload but until I see these teams start to play others in the top 4 I’ll be sticking to my current rankings (provided they don’t pull a moon and lose to a team not even on my radar). Their first two stomps saw froot and mae taking a lion’s share of the damage and frags much like 8K (i’m not typing out that shitty team name every time I need to mention them) as is to be expected in Gullywash rolls.
The pounders: Froot, mae
The dead weight: Too soon to say

#3- dunheon defendershttps://play.esea.net/teams/130977
Scout:demoted
Scout:catface
Roamer:megaboy
Pocket:Kryptonite
Demo:mc
Medic:exile
While their second match is delayed by client issues, match #1 saw them dispatch of a weak Jaguar Fiend team with relative ease, dropping a round to what I can only assume was elite demoman play out of one of the most experienced players in the division. Beyond that, their combo killed a lot and damaged a lot because it’s a roll on gullywash and I feel like a broken record at this point. Catface also got some kills so go catface
The pounders: it’s a roll who cares i’m just feeding egos at this point
The dead weight: huck

#4- 130 ms https://play.esea.net/teams/119535
Scout:Thaigrr
Scout:bunnymonster
Roamer:aim
Pocket:blew
Demo:sandblast??
Medic:lee
I’m moving this team up for two reasons. 1: Moon is apparently much worse than I could have ever imagined, and 2) No one else seems like they can contest a top 3 team. With their roster shakeup putting Thaigrr on roamer, aim on demo and sandblast on scout this team should be a little stronger, thanks to aim having any clue how to play a combo class and sandblast being at least equal to Thaigrr on scout. Aim on roamer has never been super impressive and Thaigrr knows how to play the class even if he is on 100 ping. This team still hasn’t scrimmed and if they keep that up I don’t see them beating anyone above them but the raw skill is definitely there.
The pounders: Thaigrr
The dead weight: idk they haven’t played a match yet all I know is Thaigrr won’t be the dead weight

I’m putting this team above Paradise Cafe because they didn’t get rolled 5-0. I dunno maybe I’m wrong but I don’t wanna put a team that can’t get a round off meyy in 5th so now this team is in 5th. They haven’t played a match yet so their games versus 130 ms, dunheon, and EVIL should be telling of their skill level.
Players to watch: Phorofor, Cloudmaker, Safrix
The weak link(GET IT?)s RockMonkey, Link_1012

Well, they solidified their roster with the addition of Yosh on roamer and with that pickup in hand they went into their match against meyy and got completely manhandled. I don’t know exactly what happened, it was gullywash and june has never really been a ‘skilled’ or ‘capable’ or ‘not bad’ maincaller, which could be rough, but if they want to succeed Yosh should probably just perma snipe.
The pounders june almsot had 300 dpm i guess?
The dead weight: everyone, you got rolled 5-0 get your shit together

They rolled matches on gully. I’m tired of saying the same thing in every writeup so just go up to any of the other teams whol rolled on gully and swap the names out for these guys. Interestingly Troopo top fragged in one of their matches but jesus who the fuck cares did you see the video of Retardo and Lucrative going off on each other. If you somehow haven’t check it out.Reflecto, if you’re gunna yell at your tryouts at least try to be correct? No, lucrative should not be jumping away from his combo to take high groundwhile you and your bot scout decide to feed and someone else is staying at last while you try to push out, and Luc, doing sub 250 dpm as pocket may not be the best time to bring up the fact that you’ve played over 150 matches on esea.

In an upset that falls somewhere between ‘shocking’ and ‘just depressing’ NAB comes out of nowhere to take down moon, a team who I thought would be far, far better. I will say I feel justified in calling Keith overrated after he dropped a 13-16 K/D, and dagger put on a truly gut wrenching performance going 6-22. Enough of harping on the negative though, Not Around Bears was carried by an amazing roamer performance by Mostlybacon, who top fragged in the server, as well as great demo play from RDJ. Everyone on Not Around Bears pulled their weight for the most part and I’m excited to see how they fare against some of the teams I think are still better than them. Hopefully I’m proven wrong.
The pounders whole squad tbh
The dead weight: Dagger (i know he’s not on this team but come on man I needed to say again that you gotta step it up)

While their second match is delayed by client issues, match #1 saw them dispatch of a weak Jaguar Fiend team with relative ease, dropping a round to what I can only assume was elite demoman play out of one of the most experienced players in the division. Beyond that, their combo killed a lot and damaged a lot because it’s a roll on gullywash and I feel like a broken record at this point. Catface also got some kills so go catface
The pounders: it’s a roll who cares i’m just feeding egos at this point

Wrap Up
The lack of matches meant the rankings stayed pretty static this week, but there is a lot to look forward to coming up. Hopefully we see some closer games this week

Matches Of The Week

130 ms vs Waddle R Us https://play.esea.net/index.php?s=stats&d=match&id=7728212
(This was supposed to happen last week, I’ve left my wreite up of it in.) This is a great match for many reasons. For one we will get to see Thaigrr “farm IM noobs” but also it will put Waddle against a team with the raw DM of any other top IM team. If they can’t contest a team that is basically an all dm pug team then their chances of beating a team with both good dm and good coordination look bleak at best.

Casted by me @ https://www.twitch.tv/saamaas, this match should be happening after Waddle R Us play The Pound. I would expect it to start around 11 EST on Tuesday.

Waddle R Us vs Every Villain Is Lemons https://play.esea.net/index.php?s=stats&d=match&id=7728225

This will be another test of Waddle. I expect them to be able to take this match but not without a fight put up by EVIL. Look for percy and troopo to put up big nummbers for EVIL and phorofor, safrix, and cloudmaker to do work for Waddle. This should be interesting because I see Waddle being a team carried by their combo and EVIL being the opposite.

oh yeah uh for right now at least from the like three scrims we've played we are doing - this isn't final but probably what you will be seeing in our week one matches.

scouts: bunny / thaigr
roamer: sandblast
pocket: aim
demoman: blew
medic: lee

I know I put up the list of people on our roster but that was just kind of writing down all six names in not a very specific order :V
