we can disagree on the reasons why and what would have prevented it, but it's no secret that ISIS really loves murdering gay people.

CAN WE DISCUSS ESPORTS PLEASEEEEEEE
Then why don't you actually comment on the subject instead of throwing a tantrum and not actually contributing anything yourself? Like, it's good that e-sports are being recognised, might be for less idealistic reasons like wru pointed out, but it's just a first step towards a future where games are broadcasted live on tv in pubs and you have people cheering or crossing their fingers since they placed their bets.
i mean, it's not like you were actively contributing to the actual discussion until you got goaded into it by people telling you to stop

Why don't you start reading the thread and see the first response already derailed the discussion, and when an actual Russian tries to clarify, and get responses like *blabber* and more shit thrown towards him, well, i'm compelled to contribute to that matter which is obviously way more pressing to the people who replied and ignored the thread subject to bash on a Russian , and look at you, blaming me of "not contributing until goaded by people telling you to stop" while you only contribute after i point out you didn't. How much more of a hypocrite can you get?

remedyshorasbfaalizeeshorasEnterimesports legally recognized before gay people, gj russiaBecause you don't contribute to anything by being gay.

Inb4 accused of homophobia.

it is not about what they contribute, instead people should have the liberty to fuck whichever gender they want
No one gets arrested in Russia for being gay. One thing that isn't allowed is gay marriage. I don't know what kind of source of information you're using, but it's definitely not reliable. One of my foreign mates once sent me a video of people hunting down gay people in Russia (according to the title). However, it's not about gay people, it's about pedophiles. Those guys are quite well-known in Russia and I do now for sure they aren't hunting gay people. No need to use false information or some stereotypical shit as an argument.
Everyone here seeing homophobia in my message. Then why the guy who admitted to be gay actually agrees with me?
people get arrested for enforcing "gay propaganda" im sorry your country is really shitty dude but you're beyond wrong in whatever point you're trying to make

edit before you say something stupid about my comment: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_LGBT_propaganda_law

The propaganda ban came after various backed US-sponsered groups are trying to rile up tensions between Russia (which just like eastern europe is socially conservative) and western europe/USA and then cry to the world how awful Russia is, Imagine someone sending 10 000 books of mein campf to random people in Israel, which could cause legal problems to them and solves nothing (and this is the fkh8 colouring book campaign before the Sochi olympics). and then claim it's only in the name of "freedom"

and I agree, in youth children go through different phases, and sexual orientation is a private matter, and you need some maturity and life experience, so you can decide for yourself that the choices you make in love are your own and true. how many kids aren't there growing up now, who think they are gay or transexual, becuase it's so trendy to be so there is this weird kind of peer pressure, and then years later you get to read these really sad stories of de transistioned people or even worse, suicides?

Who you are is irrelevant to your opinions/arguments

then why is everyone piling up to attack shoras becuase he is telling the truth? Oh wait, it's because he's Russian, and people are indoctrinated to hate anyone from that country.

As a gay person, I have to agree with shoras though. Merit does not come out of whatever your identify or what your sexual preference is, it's your actions as a person.

#126 GoT season 6 in Music, Movies, TV
SpaceCadetSo because I am a warfare history buff I decided to take a much closer look at this ship conversation. After doing some research I think we are all in error, especially when talking about the types of ships being shown on TV and relating them to human history time periods. There is no way any of the ships in GoT are Persian, Roman, Greek or anything of that time period.

From the TV appearances, I see 2 distinct types of ships and they are both visible in this photo side by side. That photo is from the Backwater Battle at Kings Landing before the fire was ignited. As you can see, there is 1 larger ship that sits higher in the water on the right side. It is flanked by smaller ships on either side. You can also see construction of both ships is very different and for good reason. One ship is a Warship/Transport Vessel design (right) and the other is more of a Merchant Ship design for carrying cargo/troops (left).

The ship design makes another appearance when Price Oberyn from Dorme sails into Kings Landing. Here is his Ship

Yet another example of this design is Jon Snow’s fleet at the retreat from Hardhome. Ships Seen Here

The last example is the fleet we are talking about specifically. The Iron Fleet seen here. You can clearly see the same exact ship design on the 4 ships closest on the left but as you look further out, it is difficult to see exact designs and there may be smaller ships in that flotilla.

These ships in GoT are almost exact replicas of the Caravel or possibly Carrack type ships from our past.

This puts them in or around the 15th century. I have not seen any ships powered by oarsman on GoT so the ships used are not “Galleys” by definition. That I believe explains the larger Warship/Transport.

The Smaller ships are very similar to Knarr Vessels which are old Viking Merchant Ships. I do not believe it would be possible to “quickly build” 1000 of the Caravel ships but it may be very possible to simply build merchant transports of the Knarr type to ferry large amounts of cargo.

In the most recent episode, if you watch the director talk about what happens, he specifically mentions the Ironborn as being of Viking Inspiration. This makes perfect sense when you look at both types of ships being used. The Knarr and Caravel ships are built from Viking Shipbuilding techniques so it all does connect.

Good post and you know your stuff , but i don't think anyone made the case that the actual design was anything like ancient times, but it depends if the ship has a flat bottom surfacehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cog_(ship)#/media/File:CMM_-_Przekr%C3%B3j_poprzeczny_kogi.JPG , becuase than it might as well be a cog https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cog_(ship)#/media/File:Bremen_Hansekogge_RolandvonBremen.JPG and if i'm not mistaken Frisian pirates would use these, and frisian pirates have been a thing since Roman times, so they probably know how to designate a good raiding vessel by the '800s

SpaceCadetsacThe persian navy was constructed in the Ionian cities, it's not as if they could construct them in the persian gulf and sail all the way across africa to reach the meditterrean. .
During that battle the Ionian Rebels had their own ships. Perhaps some were made along that coast for the fleet but not the bulk of the battle fleet. You may need to consult a historical map but the "Persian Empire" of this time period used the Persian Gulf area to expand East, not West.

The Persians controlled all of the coastline from beyond Armenia (current day Georgia and Russia) down to Egypt at the top of Africa. If you look at the map you understand what an incredible amount of coastline that includes. Getting 1000 ships from that vast stretch of coastline was easily possible and they had over 1200 for the battle.

I think you misunderstood what i said, because that's exactly what I meant when i said they had their ships build on their western coastline, including from the Ionians who were crushed in the rebellion which lead to the first greco-Persian war. They provided over 100 ships to the Persian Navy and were not on the greek side for the second Greco-Persian war which had the battle of Salamis. My fault for just using the term ionian coastline then, but I meant that they wouldn't be able to use a fleet constructed in the persian golf.

SpaceCadetOne of the main reasons 1000 ships is kinda crazy when you compare to actual human history is size. From what I understand, the ironborn do not have incredibly large amounts of land under their control.

The Persian fleet you mention was full of ships ordered to that location from all over the empire and the Persian empire was incredibly vast. The same can be said about the Romans as they gained land and resources.

The persian navy was constructed in the Ionian cities, it's not as if they could construct them in the persian gulf and sail all the way across africa to reach the meditterrean. and the Romans in the first punic war didnt even have control over sicily or entire Italy. The vast Roman empire only started being a thing AFTER having three punic wars. And in the books, the Ironborn do have fortresses captured on the coasts, so i imagine they would just import lumber from there; they have more ground under "temoporary control" untampered by any authority on the western westeros mainland then is shown in the series..

But yeah spartan you're absolutely right if it seems they don't have either the resources or the menpower for their goals, based on the outcome of the previous rebellion and war they had and what you see of them in the series. a 1000 ships in one month, would be crewed by tens of thousands of men, who also have to build them and have to run agriculture/fishing metallurgy in the meantime. They should have took a page from the Dutch and had them steal the Lannister navy's flagships.

#114 GoT season 6 in Music, Movies, TV
the301stspartanI don't know if this is actually realistic if tens of thousands (maybe more?) of people work on them but it seems ridiculous to me (for reference the Spanish Armada was a fleet of 130 ships, cost 2/3 of the spanish empire's income and took several years to build). Someone with shipbuilding experience clear this up for me

Xerxes of the Persian empire has been said to build up a fleet of 1207 ships in the two years before the battle of Salamis.

The Romans, has to build up their fleet in one season multiple times, after storms basically wreck most of their navy

"Despite the Roman victories at sea, the Roman Republic lost countless ships and crews during the war, due to both storms and battles. On at least two occasions (255 and 253 BC) whole fleets were destroyed in bad weather; the disaster off Camarina in 255 BC counted two hundred seventy ships and over one hundred thousand men lost, the greatest single loss in history'
Since the Ironborn are basically pirates it's not hard to imagine them having a massivle fleet.
"Immediately after the end of the war, a permanent force of ca. 100 vessels was established in the Aegean from the contributions of Rome's allied maritime states. Although sufficient to guard against Mithridates, this force was totally inadequate against the pirates, whose power grew rapidly.[25] Over the next decade, the pirates defeated several Roman commanders, and raided unhindered even to the shores of Italy, reaching Rome's harbor, Ostia.[26] According to the account of Plutarch, "the ships of the pirates numbered more than a thousand, and the cities captured by them four hundred."[27] "

BUT the effect of this would lead to severe deforestation and later soil erosion, basically having to deal with a lot of enviromental problems. Just ask Sicily which used to be a heavily forested island, until the Romans basically cut down every tree they could use, forever changing the landscape of the island.
