Ive been playing with friends for a bit and the party system does seem to work with the steam overlay using the join game option.

Default mainmenuoverride with the friends list section commented out, fixes stuttering according to shylo.
I however dont know if the party system works with steam overlay invites or just from the ingame friends list invites, so by removing the friends list you might be removing your ability to invite people to a party.
