#89 Esea Client Mining Bitcoins in Off Topic

That is a very reasonable point, and one, I suspect, would hold up in court very well for him if he had to appear there. It is indeed a very strange situation they landed themselves; I am happy to be parting ways with them.

kirbyAs shitty as it was, I don't see anything actually happening to them because of it.

Historically, 'esport' gamers have made lousy activists when it comes to their own hobby. Everyone just wants to play games, and that's fine, since it's not like ESEA being a shitty business with sketchy software practices is going to put little Jimmy from team Exigent into poverty because they took advantage of his computer. But it does make us as a group less powerful and less persuasive if this sort of behavior is tolerated.

TF2 and ESEA have always gone hand-in-hand since I started playing despite shitty servers, subscription fees, broken client after a TF2 patch, and voting that only includes the subset of players that pay subscription fees during offseason. I just think 6v6 TF2 could be better, but it would take solidarity to draw-out any change from ESEA, and, if that did not play out, a lot of unpaid work to create a reasonable alternative.

In closing, I will point out that ETF2L is a good counter-example to the argument that if ESEA dies, then TF2 dies with it. I'm not saying that it is a good league, but that it serves as a decent example of marked popularity without the presence of a LAN at the end of the rainbow.

AllealAll in all I think it's weird as hell. I'm a little floored by the amount of money they made in such a short time, and relieved that it's going to the prize pots. Their reasons for it do seem convenient but it doesn't mean they can't be true. The CS community seems to be reacting a lot more strongly to this than we are, and given what we know about them, our reaction is probably the more reasonable one.

It's actually an ingenious idea (gamers usually have powerful gpus), but, as turts pointed out, the implementation is terrible. If an opt-in situation to generate income for themselves and the prize pots was provided, ESEA would still have my limited respect, but the fact that his bitcoin code slipped into the mainstream ESEA client build and was distributed to the public reveals a very spotty moral code that I would contend he (Eric Thunberg - or lpkane) is trying to mask by claiming amateur mistakes - despite the organization developing this software for some time.

Basically, I feel, especially as a software developer myself, that this is a breach of trust that will never be mended. It makes me especially wary of what else ESEA client is doing while it runs in the background.

Eric Thunberg taking rank among infamous e-sports moguls like Scott Valencia and Angel Munoz. How reassuring to see that ESEA is owned by a child. What a scumbag.

I will not deny that ESEA props north american TF2 on its back with its prize pools and an actual LAN, but I am not bending over for some rich douche who finds it perfectly acceptable to even allow this "bitcoin mining joke" to have even been considered, not to mention actually implementing it and having it leak (lol whoops guys 'our bad').[/b]

Should I bend over for this asshole in the name of north american TF2? Not even fucking likely. Fuck ESEA, and fuck if they ever receive a dime from me ever again.

Have you overclocked your 2500K? Maybe mess around with your Nvidia driver settings a bit.

TwitchTVJohnedit: I'm questioning the consistency of this. I just ran it a second time with the same settings and got 164.4 fps.

Taking an average of 3 results would be better, but it's more time consuming. 5.2 is a pretty sweet overclock

WaldoBecause of how unvaried the current benchmark demo is, I recorded another one, which includes a lot more camera movement and some places with no action. It's about 2 minutes long, still shouldn't take too long.

Here's a DL link https://mega.co.nz/#!YoFDiCZC!CTaoM0DYyh_KwuVUf87YEwEeQPBOYJi7pZ2Gc2dxjaw

My time for it with dx9/shadows off/gibs+ragdolls off
8509 frames 89.021 seconds 95.58 fps (10.46 ms/f) 8.416 fps variability

While I appreciate the thought, keeping the benchmark demo the same from the start will make everything much easier. Additionally, my benchmark demo simulates a worst case scenario the entire duration of the benchmark, which is much more helpful for the people trying to make sure their avg fps exceeds a certain minimum (say 120 FPS) so they can reliably predict if their FPS might drop in a critical 6v6 moment like a midfight.

looks like cl_threaded_bone_setup 1 nets around a 5-10% increase. good catch

guessing it might be unstable though or they'd set it to 1 in the config

CPU is really important (TF2 likes high clock rates)

Chris's dx9 fps config also makes a huge difference for me. Here's my result with no config enabled.

2639 frames 24.273 seconds 108.72 fps ( 9.20 ms/f) 5.314 fps variability

CPU and overclock: 2500K @ 4.6 GHz
Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 650 Ti

Driver version: 314.07
dxlevel (default is 90): 95
Resolution: 1920x1080
Full-screen or windowed: Full
FPS configs enabled: none (recommended video settings)
Shadows enabled/disabled: enabled

Additional notes: "let the 3d application decide" nvidia settings

35% increase in avg FPS thanks to chris's dx9 fps config.

This process takes a maximum of five minutes and is helpful information to everyone TF2 from potential streamers to people trying to make decisions about new hardware to buy. For example, by benchmarking this morning I learned that disabling shadows raises my average FPS by almost 30 (useful for offsetting the FPS penalty that is caused by live streaming).

Please offer more details than what I have listed in my example below if you find something substantial. For example, if tweaking a driver setting gives you a large gain in average FPS, document it in your results.

Instructions:

1) Get benchmark demo http://www59.zippyshare.com/v/2C8hcbm3/file.html

2) Extract benchmark1.dem to your tf2 folder like any other demo

3) Make sure no resource heavy processes are running

4) Open TF2 and run the benchmark from console:

timedemo benchmark1

5) Copy the result from console

6) Post your result to this thread following my example below:

2639 frames 15.886 seconds 166.12 fps ( 6.02 ms/f) 7.576 fps variability

CPU and overclock: 2500K @ 4.6 GHz
Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 650 Ti

Driver version: 314.07
dxlevel (default is 90): 95
Resolution: 1920x1080
Full-screen or windowed: Full
FPS configs enabled: Chris dx9frames
Shadows enabled/disabled: disabled

Additional notes: n/a

not sure if it related to your crashing, but -dxlevel 81 in your launch options should be removed after the first time launching with it

I have this interesting snack idea I would like to share that many of you have probably never tried before.

What you do is take about 1/3 cup of chia seeds and put them in the bottom of some sort of container. I like it more when the container is glass so I can watch with delightful glee as my snack forms. Now fill up the container with about a cup of water (you could also use almond or coconut milk) and mix the two together with a spoon. Mix it every 5 minutes until about 15 minutes has gone by. You should be left with some sort of amorphous solid that is more jelly-like than water.

Now you are free to add to your chia goo as you wish. I like to put vanilla extract and salt in it - then I will proceed to eat it with either a banana or a peach.
