I'm frankly surprised that an invitation from Multiplay would not be enough to get a visa. :(
Possibly, as someone mentioned before, because he is younger than 18.
If it's a "bring your own PC" event you could possibly do it in a random school (big space, has electricity and desks). :)
Though it probably wouldn't give the same feel as the big LAN events give.
