#19 polling rate in TF2 General Discussion

I'll add my two cents since I also just got a new mouse with 8k polling rate support (ATK X1). On a Ryzen 7 9800X3D running Windows 11 24H2, 240 Hz monitor locked at 224 fps + G-Sync and:

  • mastercomfig high preset
  • -vulkan launch parameter
  • windowed borderless with the 0x000802A5 present method flag in NVPI-R

8k polling rate does result in stuttering that seems to pick up in intensity when doing fast mouse movements. 4k polling rate seems to not affect performance any more than 1k does. Now, whether or not it actually helps with aiming is another matter... but it "feels" fine at least.

mousiopeAnyone with a 5800x3D?

Finally able to oblige.
Third run of benchmark1 on mastercomfig medium preset w/ customizations (spoiler below), 1080p. Hardware: RTX 3070 Ti, 32 GB DDR4-3600 CL18

Show Content
Launch parameters: -novid -nojoy -nosteamcontroller -nohltv -particles 1 -precachefontchars -noquicktime
modules.cfg:
anti_aliasing=off
download=all
sprays=on
sillygibs=off
sheens_tint=high
jigglebones=on
textures=ultra
fpscap=unlimited
hud_player_model=on
dynamic_background=preload
outlines=medium
opengl=skip
party_mode=request
ragdolls=high

3700X (old CPU):

2639 frames 14.540 seconds 181.50 fps ( 5.51 ms/f) 14.491 fps variability

5800X3D (new CPU):

2639 frames 11.418 seconds 231.13 fps ( 4.33 ms/f) 17.377 fps variability

I run these mastercomfig settings because I'm a filthy pubber, but if you'd like a run with more comp-like settings, I can bench it for you (as long as it's still mastercomfig). Either way, for just a single CPU generation gap I'm pretty happy with the result, now I just have to check if my frames can still drop to 100s in pubs, but I'm not getting my hopes up...

EDIT: So far, so good! From dropping to 100-110 on medium preset, to dropping to 130 on medium high. That alone made the upgrade worth it for me, tbh

SetsulWould be great to see a comparision with 2667, 3200, 3733 and possibly higher though.

A little something for you, then.

Now that the BIOSes have matured a fair bit, I decided to OC my RAM to see how much of a difference would that make. Couldn't overclock my sticks as much as I hoped for, but there's something at least.
As a reminder: R7 3700X (PBO enabled), Win10 1903, 16 GB RAM; customized mastercomfig medium preset (afaik it's just textures set to very high and ragdolls enabled); DX9; launch parameters recommended by mastercomfig; using benchmark_test (the newer one)

Before (XMP profile, 3000 MHz CL16):

4812 frames 21.475 seconds 224.07 fps ( 4.46 ms/f) 31.826 fps variability

After (OC, 3466 MHz CL16):

4812 frames 20.741 seconds 232.01 fps ( 4.31 ms/f) 31.111 fps variability

(got screenshots of before/after with CPU-Z window open, I can send them if anyone wants to)

Just about 3.5% of difference. Whether or not it's worth the hassle and the potentially shorter lifespan I'll leave to your judgement ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Is this dx8 or dx9?

DX9, launch parameters exact same from the mastercomfig's github page.

500 reboots later (not really, just under a hundred actually; don't do B450 boards, kids), here I am testing the 3700X. Results are in.

Setup details:
- Windows 10 1903
- GeForce driver 431.60
- GeForce Experience with replay enabled, no game optimization
- game details: mastercomfig v6 latest, 1080p, DX9, mastercomfig's launch parameters, mods: budhud, Less Distracting Explosions, mastercomfig addons (mouse tweaks, no pyroland, no soundscapes, no tutorial)
- tested with timedemo_runcount set at 3, so stuff being loaded in doesn't lower the results

Since there's a ton of data, I figured it'd be better to show it all in a table, and since TFTV doesn't have tables... Here's a Google Docs link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AGtyRBvgcpYv2T8h9bSgx9IDd8fXFES175tPrsK5hMI/edit?usp=sharing

whitepuzzle, I think you'll be happy with the results ;)

Screwballkamild1996_v2My 3700X arrived today, I can certainly run such a benchmark for you (on 16GB dual channel 3000 MHz CL15) and I'll post the result tomorrow :)should be trivial to oc the mem to 3200/3400

Probably so, but given the unstable nature of B450 boards I'll leave the memory alone until a somewhat-fully stable BIOS comes out. It's good enough that the XMP profile works.

whitepuzzleWaiting on Zen 2 benchmark1 run with mastercomfig v6 medium-low (or v7 low) then. Because if it can do at least 280fps under that condition, I will surely pick up a 3700X soon.

^ what CPU is that?

I'm upgrading from i5-3570k to R7 3700X, so I'll make sure to post some comparisons with different mastercomfig presets, I might include frametime graphs with that if I feel like it :)
