HueyLewisIt's definitely not all target-based. I barely use facebook and my news feed is a ton of shit I've never liked or cared about. TF2 did show up for me though. I think it's mostly what's overall trending on Facebook, like twitter.
As someone else mentioned, the reason there's a ton of stuff that you don't like or care about is because Facebook doesn't have enough data on you to properly suggest things. Every person's trending list will look a little different based on links you click, friends you interact with, pages you like, and a ton of other factors that Facebook tracks.
