#95 Comp.tf - A competitive tf2 wiki? in Projects

On a separate note, is anyone against my previous suggestion of adding POVs, Commentaries, Guides, etc. into each class and/or map page?

ie adding PYYYOUR's medic commentaries for the medic page, Ruwin's Demo Reviews from his recent streams, etc.

Maybe even some amazing games played and casted from some LANs -- I'm thinking something along the lines of the older Mix^ vs. bp games, one of the being on badlands, iirc.

WaldoRJ- I like the way the badlands page looks in terms of format, but the calls section could be made much more direct using what I did in the viaduct page, take a look at it and tell me what you think, it should be pretty easy to combine the two.

Someone else must've copy-pasted the Badlands page from the wiki. Too bad I can't cite it myself. (it isn't that big of an issue, come to think of it)

Anyway, I do like your idea with the Viaduct page, though it might be hard to read some of the numbers in the pictures -- I like the idea of a legend type of thing, but maybe a mix of your idea and the ones already posted would work?

I believe that having specific sections for each callout (like the Badlands page), and having a numbered or legend-filled (thats a word now) picture directory could work. I don't think having one or the other could work fully, in my opinion.

KanecoCheck the current pages, if there's info missing on the wiki you can fill in, sure why not? Altough In the future it would be better to have original content and not copypasted.

Alright, I'll see if I can dig up my old write ups. They were original content written by me, the fact that I would be copy-pasting them shouldn't matter in my opinion -- it is still my original work. >_>

Kaneco ...long response..If we have all that info compiled and cataloged it would make it that much easier not only for beginners but for everyone that wants to improve.

Sounds like a good goal to have. If we have enough eyes from the community on various contributions, then it shouldn't be too hard to have someone post it onto the wiki.

#82 Comp.tf - A competitive tf2 wiki? in Projects

I've written bits and pieces for the Official TF2 Wiki's now-stalled Competitive pages. Would you like me to revisit them, and possibly paste them over to this wiki?

/start ramble

Show Content
I had begun working on the call-outs on various competitive maps -- things like "diagonal" on badlands second, also known as "Finland" in some places in EU (from what I've been told long ago) -- I would put a picture of the section of the map next to a short description of the place...saying things like "In Diagonal a Scout or roaming Soldier will be holding here to stop the enemy combo from pushing through and wrapping around the defending team's gray bridge"

^ That description above is just a mock up, of course -- I don't mind rewriting things if it doesn't make sense, or sounds too commanding.

/end ramble

I also suggest we find the most comprehensive guides out there and put them under a "References" or "External Links" section for each class. I worked on DarkNecrid's Spy Guide, and I believe it to be very helpful to those who chose to read it.

There are various "guides" on maps as well -- the old "Moose Tracks" series was very helpful for Highlander players, and I believe the Crack Clan team members are still working on their "Crack Clan Basics" series for various competitive maps and strategies -- those could be very useful for newer 6v6 players as well.

Sorry for the super long post, but I am anxious to help out if at all possible. :)

manaI'll respond to just this, as vile and Ghostac have you covered pretty well. My short experience is that you're right. I was blown away by b4nny's real life play; it's really on another level than that I've seen anywhere else. To see it online is one thing, to see it in person is seriously something different. He also generously taught me how to c-tap, which is by far much easier to learn when you can physically see the timing.

That's what I was thinking; being able to see something, especially something tough like ctapping, in person would help a ton. Great point!

Despite my efforts to try and work out my scheduling to go to this thing, I won't be able to attend. :(

Will there be others in the future, possibly in the summer? I still would love to talk to and meet everyone. You all seems so supportive. :)

mana If anything, it's massive inspiration to get better. I met b4nny and bl4nk at Seattle LANFest and I'd be a liar if I said it didn't push me to do better.

- You're also correct about the off-time. And being 18 might be a factor, yes. Really depends on the crowd.

- You don't need to tear down your setup until the end of Sunday. If they do things right it's pretty secure. Some people are renting hotels (me and John), some people will probably sleep at the LAN itself (I did this at Seattle LANFest, was surprisingly not terrible).

It also helps to be able to bring a friend, but it's not necessary. :)

First of all, thanks for responding! :) Going to go in order and ask a few follow up questions, if that is okay.

-I feel like I would want to improve a ton after meeting anybody in person...I would love to watch them and how they play. I'm learning Pocket and Roamer since I love to jump, but my DM is lacking; I've been hitting up pugs since I can't commit to a team due to school.

Anyways...

-Hmm, my main concern is about having my gear stolen. It's not that I don't trust us TF2 players, I'm just worried about leaving my seat and coming back to something missing.

-With that point in mind, if I was to sleep at the LAN, would I be sleeping at my chair? :P I guess I would pack accordingly, though.

-I don't have any friends who play TF2 in real life, sadly. It would likely just be me on my own, though I'm sure one of my parents is paranoid about me going.

Sorry for my rambling, thanks again for responding! If my schedule lines up, I should be able to go. :D Are there any seats left?

If I can go, this would be my first LAN ever; mind I ask a few newbie questions? :P

(Sorry for the horrible formatting, I'm typing on my phone.)

Even though I'm a Highlander Player, and dabbling in 6s, should I still go? I'd love to meet some of the names I see in this thread; would love to meet all the others as well.

As for gaming goes, I'm assuming we just play whatever people want to do? I heard there's a TF2 tourney as well.

As for the off times, do people just chat about look at other players or games, or something else? I'm only 18, would that be a factor in things?

And since this thing is over multiple days, and its BYOC, I'm assuming we tear down our setups on a day-by-day basis, and would rent hotels or something?

Sorry for such newbie questions. I've been wanting to go to a LAN for a while, and I would love to see if I could make it!

An amazing sniper and scout, and a guy who is always looking to improve. Has begun mentoring me on some Scout play, and I would definitely recommend him!
