Our team's medic uses it pretty frequently, saved him from fall damage deaths a couple of times already.
The taunt is actually pretty decent for some situations, for example on gully last our med is jumping on the ring after the uber and taunts which gives everyone on the point a fair amount of health regen.
That said ubersaw is probably still better^^

Tips for airshotting

Wait and track the movement before you shoot.
Most soldiers will do one simple left or right strafe when they are bombing you, cause they have to keep their aim somewhat steady so let them do their strafe first and then shoot.
Also warming up on tr_rocket_shooting for like 10 minutes can help hitting easy airshots more consistently.
