In a team fight, a spy who can run in at any moment for a backstab and also put out a random 100 damage onto anyone would be a great asset, and during stalemates, the spy can just sit with the cloak and dagger and call out uber percentages, offclasses, and flanks to an extent.
Ultimately they provide very similar information, except the spy provides a tangible increase in fighting power.
