Matthew is also being projected to hit Maryland, Delaware, NJ/NYC, and the South part of New England. Even though it's going to be at it's weakest point when it hits the Northeast, you should definitely prepare if anything goes wrong.

Clueless about storms so this question might sound dumb: Instead of doing all that prep mentioned in the OP, if you know u are gonna be hit, why not hide in some safe basement/shelter to begin with? If I lived in a house made of wood and I knew this was coming, I'd haul ass and not stock up on beans and stay in the house and hope for the best.

Florida's building code is very good. Generally your house is safe enough especially if you have hurricane shutters on your windows there's not much else you can do

This isn't like a tornado where most of the damage is catastrophic in a small timeframe.

With hurricanes hitting the mainland US, theres some damage that's an immediate danger (winds/flash floods), but the real concerns come from longer term flooding, being without power and running water for weeks, etc

Lowcountry South Carolinian here, I will probably evacuate to Columbia if the storm is strong enough. I stayed here through last year's flooding so I guess I'll have to find out.

Not exactly as important as having necessities for being alright without power for a few days, but maybe brainstorm some things for you to do during the day while your power is out. Personally, I wish I had used a recent time when a transformer blew up a few miles down the road from where I lived to actually do some cable management work for my setup. Although I did get to finishing a book that I had been meaning to finish, which was nice.

For as "nice" as this is, I don't think it is something to celebrate considering the circumstances.
