Will a wired connection fix my problems?

I moved locally, to a region that had similar internet quality/routing to my last place.

However, at my new apartment I am no longer the only person using the internet. Now I get intermittent lag spike where I become one of those players that moves in glitchy slo-mo. I suspect these occurences are when my roommates are downloading or something, because I can occasionally cause it for myself when I have a youtube video buffering for instance.

Will a wired connection help me? I hear it's noticeably better in general, so maybe it will fix my problem.

It will provide a more reliable connection.

However, it might not provide considerably faster up/down speeds if other people are using the same network to download large files.

Yes, it will. Switched to it when my wifi connection became unreliable due to parents using smartphones and tablets more regularly, both speed and stability improved dramatically. I'd say it's worth it.
