So I started keeping a monthly budget/checkbook and designed it how I liked it. This is what I came up with. It's helped me the last few months so I figured I'd throw it up here in case anyone else might want to utilize it. Help's me to see exactly where everything is going and whats expected. Also handy because you can get the Google Sheets app on your mobile and add things on the fly.

The idea is that each month you would start a new sheet by duplicating the "Generic Month" tab and renaming the new sheet to the appropriate month.

( To anyone who doesn't use Google Docs, you can save these to use online by clicking the arrow on the tab on the bottom like on "Generic Month" and clicking "Copy To.." [You must sign in] and copying it to an existing doc)

kinda cool but a little archaic considering there are resources like mint - free, mobile apps, etc.
