The idea behind it is one of the many things soldiers have a hard time with: ammo conservation. Even if you crater once/twice/thrice, it's still better than grinding rockets that instantly get healed @ 24 HP/s.
Perhaps the most ideal scenario is, get 300HP, crater, equalize, get to 284/285, crater again, repeat as necessary.
