I was thinking of getting a chromebook for college so I had something lightweight to carry around with me. Any ideas on what the best ones are (for like $300 ideally)

Acer C720 go for the i3 4GB RAM if you are in the US.
Be careful though ifyou need you take your laptop into college to run any applications it may not run. If all you need it for is lecture notes, Google docs and for procrastinating during lectures then it is a good investment for your needs if you have a desktop PC in your room. Elsewise I'd consider getting a more traditional laptop. Also to note, as a computer scientist I quickly found the OS pretty limiting and installed Linux but if you have a desktop like mentioned you'll won't have to.

I would look around, http://www.theverge.com/2014/6/18/5817400/the-best-chromebook is an okay place for reference and the Toshiba Chromebook 2 seems the way to go, I don't own one but I've heard they are quite good

If you're willing to forgo aesthetics, you can get a laptop with decently better specs and about the same size.
Here's a list of refurbished workstations on newegg with i5's, 128GB+ SSD's, and 4GB - 8GB of RAM. All under $300
